Up to this year, I'd seen just one before in my life. This year, they are plentiful, although that doesn't mean it's easy to find one to pose for you.

Great shots and congrats on the capture . Couple years ago one late afternoon I saw one of those here . I took a few picts but could not get close enough for a good picture . It was after a rain and it was on the ground hanging around a large puddle of water in a small field . All I had was my 70-200mm F/4L but it was not enough reach for a close view . got a couple shots off and it disappeared and have never seen one again . Never knew what they were called til now .

Thanks Ron. I'm glad I could enlighten you. They are a unique bird. It's almost as if they are wearing a beanie. It did take me several attempts to find one that would ignore me and land where I asked him to.

I have many of these birds in my hay fields, they really seem to like the tall cool season grasses. I do not have any photos of them, they have been very difficult for me to capture. These excellent pics have me wanting to try again, Would also like to capture one in flight going away as they really show their color then but so far they have eluded me in every pose. Well done mn shutterbug.

Really nice Mike, very hard to take nice photos of this bird because of the problem of exposing the blacks properly. But obviously you did not have those problems, great job!

Excellent, nice close shots, Mike. I have seen exactly one in my life, this year. Hoping for more!
