The usb 2.0 plug on the back of this hard drive goes bad. This piece is also what encrypts your data. The only way I was able to recover my data was to go buy another one and take them both apart and swap the part. My friend has had this happen on 2 of his. I still have mine and is currently still working with the new piece installed. I also have the firewire version and have had no issues with it to date. -Jim
