Is Phase One Capture One Pro 7 any better than Photoshop CC? With all this talk about the subscription fee for CC, I'm looking at alternatives.

I've tried DxO, and find it slow and not as reliable as PS CS6, or CC for that matter. I'm trying CC right now.

C1 Pro is primarily a raw converter and can not to be compared directly with Photoshop.
It can be compared to Lightroom, except it's cataloguing (IMO) is nowhere near as good and easy to use as LR.
I use LR (v5) for my cataloguing and any quick edits but tend to use C1 Pro v7 for most of my work, with any final adjustments done in PS CS6.

I did the trail of Capture One Pro 7 and loved it but it ran to slow for my taste.Still might be in my future. Capture One Pro 7 has a lot to offer though.

I have a question -

How does Capture One Pro 7 software compare to Canon Raw editing software when used on a Canon Camera not a Phase One Camera?

From what I have read, it seems that Capture One Pro 7 has advantages over Canon raw software but am I mistaken?

Thanks-

i've tried Canon's DPP and think it's interface is very, very lame.

been wanting to try the trial of Light Room and Capture One, getting ready to back up my system and check out both current versions, unless someone can give me good reason not to.

:D

Looking for basic cataloging and outstanding RAW conversion.

Capture One Pro - slow but nice results.

Coming from CameraRAW, then figuring out the mess that is Lightroom 4 (in comparison) I would call the Caputre One interface messy, BUT you get used to it and once you have adapted it will be fairly intuitive.

I've used C1 Pro for years and find it to be an easy thing to learn. Any user interface is going to be different but that doesn't mean it is hard. It is a simple matter of gaining experience with it and then it becomes quite easy and fast, imo. I like the skin tones that I get out of C1 better than those I can get out of ACR/Lightroom. In actuality either of the RAW converters are of high quality and I suggest that you find one you are comfortable with and then work towards mastering it. I certainly don't find C1 any slower to use and produce images than I do the Adobe products.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.

I'm surprised you say it isn't slower - I had CaptureOne Pro 7 or 7.1 as a trial...
The interface is a learning curve - but actual speed...

The catalogue feature was a lot worse - and a LOT slower...
Rendering the initial preview in CaptureOne Pro 7 was also slower than in Lightroom 4...

That's on a PC with an i7-3770, 24GB of RAM, a 1TB HDD (with 64GB Cache SSD) and Windows 7 64Bit. A secondary drive contains a copy of the "done library" of photos.

I have been using C1 for years - tried Lr but was just too slow and really found the scrolling up and down to get to tools tedious...

never used catalogues, always pointed directly at the folder i want to work with.. and rendering? well that's more or less instant for me with C1 v7

Good thread. I too will be looking to alternatives for Photoshop and Lightroom down the road due to Adobe's Cloud crap. I have wondered about Capture 1 Pro.

Best, Bruce
