Hi guys, i'm going to Croatia for a week with the other half in late Sept early Oct and we are staying on a island inside a national park, so ideal for lots of different photos.

But i'm debating whether to take my Canon 7D or buy an EOS-M.

If i take my Canon 7D, I'll be buying either a 70-200 f4L or a 24-105 f4L to take with me. Otherwise i'll be buying a EOS-M with 18-55 and possibly 22 pancake to travel with me.

EOS-M has just had a update to AF speeds, so seems more usable now.

What do you guys think?

P.S my other half will be travelling with her Canon 60D so i wont be alone with a large SLR if i take my 7D.

one reason I own a DSLR is to use in my travels. on the more epic journeys I care two DSLRs. that would be a no on a non-DSLR except as a back-up :D.

I use my 7D for my part-time job as a wedding photographer and for personal hobby use, but not sure if the EOS-M would be better to use for my personal stuff so i dont wreck my 7D!

Sorry didn't see you're in the UK. I have a feeling the eos m is going to be updated in the near future with the same sensor tech in the 70d.

I usually take my most capable camera on trips. Im just a hobbyist so I don't rely on it for work, but I would be devastated if I lost or damaged any of my cameras...

i would go for the M for travel, its been on some fire sales lately here in the US.
its light. its well built. top notch iq compared to anything in its class. great substitute for a high end point and shoot with an apsc sensor. plus you still have your manual controls to get your creative shot if needed.

I'm not very familiar with the EOS-M but i'm a little confused on your choice of lenses that you plan to use on each camera. A wide to medium telephoto on the SLR and a superwide to standard on the EOS M. Are you planning to use each camera for different purposes?

Well if i don't buy the EOS-M then the money saved will go towards a lens for my collection, i currently have a Sigma 30 1.4 and Canon 55-250, and would get the 24-105 for general purpose shooting or the 70-200 f4L for wildlife shots.

I can quite easily cope with the 18-55 that comes with the M for my holiday :)

It depends what sort of trip you will be taking. If your trip will involve a lot of moving around, and photography is not your #1 priority, then the EOS-M seems a great fit for your needs. With the new firmware update and the 22mm and 18-55 its a perfectly capable replacement for an SLR and it realy is very small and light. It lokos like you dont have any wide lens in your collection at the moment, so it may even be better than your 7D and current set up for travel.

However if your trip is primarily for photograhy, you will be able to take the time to focus on your photography, and you will be stationed somehwere for much of it, then I would take the SLR and spend the cash on one of the lenses you are interested in.

I am in the same situation as you... Wondering if I should take my 5D3 with a set of lens to vacations or get an EOS-M. On one side, I enjoy taking photos while on vacations and I will miss my DSLR if I don't take it. On the other side, It is sometimes a pain to carry the DSLR + lenses around, especially when there is no need to take it. I do not like to leave the camera in the hotel room, so I carry my backpack wherever we go (shopping, dinner, etc.).
