My pics are so tame compared to what I see here. My macro shots are from a copy stand and my camera tethered to my laptop. My biggest concerns are lighting and depth of field.

as long as you keep shooting with the sensor parallel to the coin then DOF isn't an issue at all, you can shoot almost wide open.

I'm sure lightning is the tricky part here, build a softbox, try a polarizer...

Until you get so much magnification that the embossing on the coin is higher than your DOF. Once when I was just fooling around to see how much mag I could get, my DOF was literally paper thin: the fiber grain on the top sheet was in focus, and the one immediately under it was not.

correct, but the full coins are usually bigger then the sensor size, so unless you're focusing on a particular detail, the full coin show be lower then 1:1 (and therefor not a DOF issue at f/11-16).

But I might be wrong, I'm no coin photographer...
