Here is my current set up. I have been running a 450d with kit 18-55 and 55-250 along with a 100-400L. I just picked up a 6d along with a Tamron 70-200 2.8 vc.

I really have things covered with my 450d but I need a short lens for my 6d and I am looking for telephoto lens. My initial thought was a 24-105 but?????? I take mostly pics of my kids and dogs along with wildlife but would like something for family pics, landscape, portraits etc.

What you guys do? and thanks for all ideas and replies!

Well, I take pictures of my dogs with the 70-200, so I have more room betveen me, and the dogs.

The 24-105 is a great lens, I had it for over a year, and I made some really great pictures with it.
But for landscapes I would suggest a 17-40 or a 16-35, even tough the 24-105 is as wider (at 24mm) on the 6D, as the 18-55 (on 18) on the 450D.

It really depends if you need even wider or not.

Or you can go for a 24-70 2.8 Mk 1, if you need more light, but that has no IS.

I picked up a 28-135 for my FF. It gravity-zooms horribly but the IQ is OK with me. You can't beat it for around $250. 95% of the 24-105 for 25% of the price.

why are you looking for a telephoto? 100-400L and 70-200 F2.8 sounds like you are covered.

I think Tamron 24-70 VC would be a good combo with the 70-200 f2.8 or 24-105L if you want a little more zoom range.

My apologies on the telephoto as I meant a standard zoom to cover the shorter end between 18 or 24mm to 70 mm range.

How is the IQ on the 24 to 70 Tamron? I have in the past only looked at the telephotos as I only cared about bif shooting but now with my family more of a focus I am wanting to cover the short end with good glass and really haven't really done much research so I am asking for the collective help of the forum to get me going in the right direction.

Thanks again for the great thoughts everyone!

It's pretty good. As good as the 70-200 Tamron you have.

I so don't get this. The 24-105 is a great lens for the price. Why would anyone buy a full frame body without the kit lens thus saving money or at least have a plan in mind like, "I wanted a 24-70/2.8 instead."

And I say this because it's not just the OP, this seems like a weekly question...

The 24-105 is a great walkaround lens on a full frame body. It works well to shoot family gatherings, kids playing, etc.

First thank you all for the replying with your thoughts. I am really leaning right now towards the 24-105.

To answer your question based on my situation now. My focus with a camera has been 90% shooting wildlife and birds. My kids are now to the age where sports, dance, etc are a going to be a big deal so when I bought the 6d I was mostly thinking I needed the 70-200mm for this kind of stuff and that I could also use the 2.8 for low light wildlife. I am now realizing how much I used the kit 18 to 55 with my 450d around the house with the kids and I am going oh crap I have to have a short EF lens for the 6d for the around the house stuff and maybe other things....... It was just lack of foresight on my part:oops:
