Can you recommend better IQ than SX-1 or SX-10???

Hello All,

Can anyone recommend a compact camera that takes better still images than either the Powershot SX-1 or SX-10 which also maintains good video capability?

I purchased a Powershot SX-1 for my wife last year for video ability but would like to find something that offers a little better IQ for still images. She is taking more photographs with the compact than expected (usually reserved for our 40d) and I find the images a little to grainy.

It needs to be under $300.00 (used) and doesn't necessarily have to have full 1080p video ability.

Thanks for the reply. I don't see where the Sony RX series goes for under $300.00 used though, having checked Ebay?

I would appreciate continued input from other POTN members. Can anyone compare the image quality of the SX-1 or SX-10 to that of a newer version, such as the SX-40?

If she wants good still images, and doesn't need a long zoom, then consider the current pricing of the EOS-M at $300.

I actually looked at that model but it is to great of a deviation. I don't see it serving us as well with video due to interchangeable lenses.

Video is the most important aspect and we desire something compact and lightweight. I would like to keep the "equivalent" range around 28mm-250mm. It could be wider or longer but those are the minimum ranges I'd like to keep.

The SX-1 and SX-10 fit the bill nicely with the exception they have to much noise in the still images. I may start a thread inquiring as to whether the SX-30 or SX-40 is better in that regards?

Here's another option that may not perfectly fit your exact requirements...the Nikon P7700 with a 28-200mm zoom. You can buy a used one from bhphotovideo.com for $320.

If video's your primary objective, look at video cameras with still capability rather than still cameras with video capability. If you want a still camera with HD video and under $300, look at the current SX models Canon's offering. If you want at least the zoom range the SX1 offers, you may need to raise your price range though.

Jon, I'll consider anything but would like some input in regards. Can you make a recommendation of any video camera that is equal to that of the SX-1 or SX-10 that also takes better still images?

My only complaint with the SX models I have (SX-1, SX-10) is that they have more noise in the images than desired.

For under $300, looking for a compact camera with good video quality, I'd take the Nikon P310.
If you can climb just a bit over $300, get the new P330 with its larger sensor.
