Lovely photos, such clarity. My G3 is still very new to me and am wading my way through it.

Just thought I show you this one taken a couple of years ago also from Waikiki beach.

Thank you Autumn. Your link didn't work, and I'd really like to see your picture.

Keep working with your G3 - you can do wonderful things with it, no matter what your skill level is.

I'll see if this works Scott:

I am really puzzled about this. I posted the pic and it was there for all to see, now it has vanished.

Have you any ideas why?

I'll try again.

If it doesn't work, can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong please?

Once again, it is there but this time as a thumbnail. I did exactly the same thing as last time and it was a reasonable size.

Will it stay this time?

Incredible shots from across the state of Hawaii. You'll have to make it to the Big Island next time.

Hi Chris,

Thank you; you're right, I definately have to make it to the Big Island. Have you ever driven on the Saddle Road? That looks like it would be fun (no rental cars allowed, though).

Many times. I live just a few miles from the Hilo end of the Saddle Road.

and was the G3 on a tripod when snapping this?

Hi SNF! Thank you. This was shot without a tripod (though I wish I had one at the time). I like the shot - it's very different for me, because I don't often shoot "people pictures". I used the Night Scene mode, with the flash on the 1st curtain (this makes the flash fire as soon as the shutter opens - the shutter stays open a while after that).

Details: 1/4 sec., f2.8, focal length 20mm

Here's another photo from that same "session"...

Hi Randal. Thank you! The borders are made with a script (or an "action" if you use PhotoShop). Essentially, you're just increasing the paper size to get the black, then white border. Then you add a shadow to the black border part.

Is this an action you created or is it something that can be purchased. I'm still a bit of a PS novice.

thanks

sdommin wroteI always try to get the most out of every camera I use, not only to get my money's worth, but also to prove to people that you can get good results without spending $5000 on a camera/lens system.

Amen.

I'm going to fiddle around without my UV filter for a bit. Curious to see if I can pull a tad more sharpness out of my shots (can't really pinpoint any exact benefits it is getting me).

What amounts do you find yourself using with USM? I've been using something like 100-150% / 0.3-1.0 / 3.0... just depends on the shot. Some need it - others don't.

I wrote this one for myself, but you can find all kinds of them on the Web. Do you use PhotoShop?

The UV filter isn't giving you ANY benefits, unless you are banging the camera around. Then it might be protecting your lens.

I use 2 different kinds of sharpening (USM) that PhotoPaint has and PhotoShop doesn't. One is called "Adaptive Sharpening" and one is called "Directional Sharpening". They seem to do a good job for me; I use a little of both on each shot. The equivalent USM settings that I use would be 100/1/0. Like you say, it depends on the shot, though. I try not to oversharpen.

I really like this gallery, great work done!! I want to know how you can explain the difference between these two pictures:

http://www.pbase.com/image/18543850/original (external link)

http://bencasey.fotopic.net/photo.php?o=1&id=675616 (external link)

Is it photoshop? Is there less haze or something? How did you manage to filter this? What settings do you use and do you think this differs from the other photo?

thanks I love your collection of photos!!

Thanks, Bob! That's an interesting comparison. First, my settings were 1/500 sec. at f4.5, no filters. I don't know what Ben used for his shot.

To me, the most obvious reason for the difference is haze. If you look at the horizon, you can see that Ben's shot is much more hazy than mine. That location has rapidly changing weather patterns. Also, mine was taken at about 2 pm. Ben's looks like it was much later, maybe 5 or 6 pm.

I tried to make Ben's photo look more like mine by adjusting some contrast and levels settings in PhotoPaint, but it still didn't look similar. It's the haze!

Very very nice! I'm the gal who got the G3 from RedShoesGirl. I'm leaving for Hawaii next week, 6-17, and would love any tips you can share with me so I can hopefully get pictures as nice as yours. Wishful thinking I'm sure.

What kind of settings did you use for sunset beach shots? How about afternoon beach shots and the hula girl shots?

If you have any specific settings I can start out with, that would be fantastic! Also, do you ever use the built in automatic portrait, landscape or night mode settings?

Thanks for giving me inspiration!
