17-40L isn't the best option for a 40D regardless...you should look at a 17-55IS instead

+1. I must agree.

The 17-40 might not be the best option for my 40D but, the 17-55IS is definitely not the best option for my wallet.;)
At least not a brand new one.

You could trade your 17-40 for a sigma 17-50 2.8 os and get $150 cash back to you

Probably due to the size limit of the picture, I don't see what you are trying to explain. Can you do a crop of the image area/s of what you are talking about and post that? Maybe we can tell something from that.

I suspect what i'm trying to point out won't show up in this crop view but, here it is anyway.
I wish I could describe properly what I see and, I still see it in this crop.
It looks as if the the top part of each of the two lines have a series of jagged edges running the length of each line.
Maybe it's the reflection of the water playing tricks?

Really sorry, but I just don't see the issue.

What's interesting though is your comment "have a pp over sharpened look to them. I've noticed it on all the boats." The lens itself would in no way impart that type of look. I'm just wondering if it's some way your s/w is displaying the image in conjunction with the type of monitor you're using to view it.

I've examined it on my 24" calibrated IPS monitor as well as another and just don't see the issues.

Based on what you have tried and what Mavgirl is saying, maybe due to the software i'm using, i'm seeing something that really isn't there?

Has anyone considered the fact that the problem occurs when viewed in zoom browser? I've noticed zoom browser does lots of fun things with contrasty lines. Especially when viewed at less than 100%. The blurry issue appears when viewed in the Win XP image viewer, so same image area but different issue.

OP... have you tried other software?

What you are saying is exactly the issue i'm having. So, that might explain things.
Any suggestions for other software to use?

Thank you all for your responses.

how far are you zooming in to the shot? if you go past 100% you're going to start seeing pixels

I wasn't zooming in at all when I first viewed the shot.
After downloading the image to my computer, I just opened the ZoomBrowser EX program and double clicked on the image to view it like I normally do.
I noticed the thing with the lines right away.
Wasn't even looking at the true full size image at that point.
Do you see anything regarding the lines in the crop image?

when i click the image, and then zoom in even more, i can maybe see a ghosting of the lines...did you have a filter on the lens?

to be honest though, i'm not seeing anything sticking out as a huge issue...

again though, as mentioned above, the sigma 17-50OS, or tamron 17-50 f2.8 are still better choices than the 17-40L, and are more budget friendly options

I see some ghosting. Look at the crop and where the white horizontal meets the red near the top.

Near the "stripes" I think you are seeing a combination of the ghosting and shadows and reflections from the the three dimensional stripe and any of the reflectiveness from the hull of the boat and the light.

DreDaze is asking if you had a filter on because ghosting (and flair) can/will increase at certain angles with the use of filters (cheap filters are worse at this than goo filters).

As he said I don't see much too really worry about.

Thanks for Reading & Good Luck - Jim

TBH, everything in that picture looks blurry to me? Try using a tripod and or faster shutter speed as the boat will move as well as your hand and whatever it is your standing on.

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

I don't see any issue myself. While I can see what I think the OP is talking about, my thought is that's an issue with the OP's monitor or zooming beyond 100% than the lens itself.

Besides, a lens will never "pixelate" an image...it may not resolve detail clearly, but then it'd just be blurry, not blocky as it seems in the captured image above.
