I prefer the composition of #2 then #1, the #3,4 are perfect.

love the background light from all shot (particularly #3), sharpness, detail and light are as good as it gets.

Well I sometimes cheat a bit as with this one. I picked the leaf it was on and put it on a sun chair- then when it turns round you either move your hand carefully behind it so it turns round again or move the leaf round. Takes a bit of careful patience but they will sometimes then hold a pose.
Of course you put the leaf + bug back where you found it after

Wiser then running around in circles like I do :p

I usually photograph them where they are, but like you said I guess that if you're careful enough, no harm is done by cutting the leaf, photograph it then put it back there. unless its their nest or something (which I think its not the case for this type of insects).
