SL1 for travel & similar situations where carrying a large kit is impractical. For pocket carry, anything from the Sxx series (I plan to keep using my S90 until it needs replacing). Full frame for everything else.

With the current clearance deals and new firmware, I just ordered an EOS-M. The main issue was the slow AF, Canon addressed that. At $350 with the 18-55, its a steal. I also have the EF/EFS adapter coming. Should be a fun setup. It should be mentioned that I have a 50D if needed.

Same here. The EOS-M looks too good as a compact camera to pass up at that price, esp. when I'll be adding the 22mm pancake+the adapter (for convenience, just in case).

IMO the SL1 doesn't seem to be sufficiently smaller than my T2i to replace it, although I'm still looking to finding out how the M will turn out in my hands this weekend (lost the habit of shooting with live view).

The recent price drop on the M is tempting, but I am not sure I see a compelling personal use for a camera that becomes almost as clunky as a DSLR once it wears a zoom lens, and also has worse performance and battery life.

Not the same price bracket....

If both are $299, I'd get the SL1, but it's not.

So EOS M for me ;)

I recently purchased an SL1 for my wife as an upgrade from my G12 that she commandeered. She loves it and I've used it a few times as well.... for photos where my 60D is in the picture, i.e., loaded camera bags etc.

For me, the SL1 is less of a compromise than the M, though it is larger. It's an actual DSLR in a light weight, smaller body.

that's why there are the EF-M "pancake" lens, makes the M slim !

True, though the 22mm might not be my first pick for a fixed focal length.

+1

As I've said before, if you already have some of Canon's lightweight equipment (e.g., EF-S 55-250 lens, EX270 flash), my view is that the SL1 is the no-brainer choice. Yeah, the current fire-sale price of the M is tempting, but remember you have to purchase the M mount lenses (and filters) or the adapter, which adds to the overall cost. In addition, my own personal preferences were for a true optical viewfinder and true DSLR layout, but others may have different priorities.

At the end of the day, it's actually good that we have such choices! Like choosing between vanilla ice cream or chocolate ice cream, there is really is no wrong answer. Both will take excellent pictures, so choose whichever works best for your style.

Why not? 35mm equiv is an insanely popular focal length. I really enjoy it on my X100.

I would go for the SL1, mainly because I really like having a viewfinder. The hybrid VF on the X100 is fun to use.
