So questions I have......

How in the world can I get rid of that black spot reflection from my lens when photographing such shiny critters? Am I stuck with it? Will having a macro lens reduce this effect? (Will I not have to get so close to the subject?)

Also.... ideas for getting rid of hot spot? I can try to bounce that flash around more .... somehow. Think that will eliminate it? I really just need to save pennies for a good ring flash I think. Recommendations?

You will have the black spots if you shoot any reflective bugs, try to move lower so you don't get in the reflection.Find a good enough angle to do this.
To get rid of hot spots, put a diffuser on your flash, tape some paper on the flash, like a mini softbox.

i use all three of my extension tubes on a 70-300 lens, i can stay a little further away

Thanks :) I have extension tubes.... never thought to see if they would work with my lens on a reverser ring..... will have to give that a try :)

I can't see the EXIF, whats you're shutter speed?

they seem a bit blured or OOF (or perhaps its just the low DOF).

You're using the kit lens inverted right?

Yes, inverted.... yeah its mostly the DOF, some may be camera shake.... It's hard bending in odd positions to get the right angle :P Sometimes I get shaky :P I don't remember the shutter speed.... I was just using the automatic mode.

No, I don't think I can with my particular lens. I do have some older lenses that I can do that with.... but I always forget that I have them :P I will look into it though.... I'm probably remembering it wrong :P Might have been my old gear that I'm thinking of.

Or maybe it was because I could never get good enough lighting.... gosh I can't remember why I ever decided against it :P Will revisit that for sure....especially now that I've gotten around to starting to make some kind of helpful flash contraption ;)

You can do it with the kit lens :)

The trick is to put the lens on the camera normally and then go into either manual or aperture priority mode then set the aperture to the desired value. Then hold down the depth of field preview button (that little button on the front of the camera just beside the lens mount) which will close the blades to the selected aperture (you can tell its worked because your viewfinder image will get a little darker). Then whilst still holding down the button remove the lens from the camera body (without turning the power off - keep it on).

Ok :) I WILL do that then..... I wonder if it was 35mm camera that I couldn't do it with. Because I remember looking into it years ago when I got my adapter. Thanks :)

You know what..... I think maybe it's my camera that I can't do it with... I dont think it has a DOF preview button...... will have to look again. But I do have a 35mm body I picked up not long ago that does ;)
