When I set it to Tv, the flash does not fire. I can only get the flash to fire in Auto mode, but many times the shutter is too slow.

Holding the flash button (the lighting bolt on the side of the camera) in doesn't seem to change anything.

I have searched and searched and cannot find a solution- I am afraid my flash is incompatible with my camera perhaps?

It's a Yongnuo YN560-II.

Thanks!

What camera are you using? That flash is manual only so no ETTL (auto flash control). Since you dont have ETTL try using manual camera settings.

I am using an EOS 40D.

I am on full manual- the question is how do I make the flash fire every time I release the shutter? The only way I have found to do it is to set the camera to auto.

If you have the camera in M mode and the flash properly seated it should fire if you keep your shutter speed below 1/250.

The lighting bolt button on the side is only to pop up the built-in flash on the 40D.

Check menu for Flash Control, Flash Firing = enable

I don't know why I didn't see the setting- it's "flash control" in the menu.

Thank you- I just bought two stands and two flashes with umbrellas. Funny how I never liked to use flash but it opens up a whole new world when you start bouncing light.

And thanks! I knew I was being stupid, I just couldn't find it anywhere and I don't have a manual.

You can download a PDF file of the manual from Canon:
