I'm in the market for a few new stands that I can travel with. I'm leaning toward the Hollywood Beefy Baby
, and a comparable Avenger like the A0040CS
(I'm open to others). One of my concerns with the Matthews is the Rocky Mountain leg. It looks like it's just a set screw against square tubing. Is it thick enough that it wont dent from being over-tightened? Has it ever slipped on you? I like the leveling leg of the Avenger better, the design seems more robust; the set screw goes through a slotted leg and clamps the leg from two sides. I'm sure the Matthews is fine, as they're known for great gear, I just tend to prefer over-engineering.
Is the Matthews ALL steel? The description mentions steel legs and top riser, what about the lower riser, is that Al?
The weight of the stand isn't a concern so I'm leaning toward steel for strength. The closed length is a minor concern (I'm shopping for cases now) but I'm willing to accommodate whatever. 2 risers vs 3, I'm undecided. 2 is more compact but the extra height of 3 may come in handy...
The largest modifier that would be used with these is a 69" Rotalux octa on Elinchrom Ranger Quadras
If you have either stand (or something else that fits the bill), please post your opinions and pictures. Thanks!
