Can anyone tell me two things about this flash please?

1. Will it only sync with the 5D mk2 at 1/100s ( I read this is true but surely it can't be? )
2 Why is the non RT version more expensive than the RT?

Thanks for your help

1. turn on the HSS and you can sync beyond 1/100s.
2. get the RT -> end of story. Canon made non-RT for some countries that they cant use the radio freq (if i remember correctly). no point getting the 600ex (non-rt), get the 580ex2 instead.

I never had any problem using my 5D2 with any of my 600EX-RT flashes; no issues with HSS or with max-sync speed (and it was this latter issue--max sync speed--that the OP was referring to, I believe). Yes, the manual will tell you that all pre-2012 cameras can't utilize max-sync speed or HSS but that hasn't been my experience. One thing you can't do is use Group Mode (so you can have your on-camera 600 in E-TTL, for example, and your off-camera 600 in Manual, or vice-versa). Now that I shoot with the 5D3, I must say I love the Group Mode.

Thanks for your reply. But is the sync speed on the older camera really 1/100s if I don't choose HSS?

I wouldn't consider the non RT version but I was really curious as this price difference. I guess if it was restricted to some countries for the reason you mention it would make sese due to there being less demand and smaller numbers sold.

EDIT

Oops crossed posts with you PhotoMatte. I see this is indeed the official Canon line. Weird! Glad it isn't your experience.

What? Enabling HSS does absolutely nothing for normal flash sync until max sync is exceeded by at least 1/3 stop shutter speed. Shooting with the 5D mII between shutter speeds of 1/100 and 1/200, with or without HSS enabled, will be the same result. You need to set a shutter speed of at least 1/250 before the 5D mII will go into HSS if HSS is enabled and if not enabled then your camera will be limited to 1/200 when using a 600EX-RT or ST-E3-RT on camera. You will get a warning icon and a slight shadowing (not very noticeable in most images) when setting a shutter speed of 1/125, 1/160 and 1/200 but it is not the big deal every one is trying to make it out to be. See the following post for a better explanation and examples.

I think you are mixing things up. Canon's caution about sync speed are related to when you use this combination:

  • Camera released prior to 2012.
  • 600 EX-RT flashes in remote configuration with radio control.
  • Possibly using high speed sync.
It doesn't have anything to do with using a single flash normally in the camera's hot shoe.
Then user's tests have shown that the caution is a bit on the safe side, as noted above.

In the US we call that CYA and corporate lawyers encourage marketing managers to do it all the time. :-)
And in Japan the marketing managers apparently listen to the lawyers. :-)

I got around this by buying 5D MKIII's to accompany my 600's :p

5D MkIII x2 + a lot of L's.

Cheaper than solving it with the 1DX.

And now the 6D or 70D are options.
