How can you afford it?

I have to ask you guys that own a 1D-X... how can you afford a camera in this pricerange?
I can understand if you have a company and photograph full time, it's cheaper to buy it and you earn that money in no time.

But everyone of you that own it, are you all professional photographers? If not.. how do you justify a buy like this? Were do you get the money from? Saving? Monthly payment? Bank loan?

There is nothing i want more (when it comes to material things) than to own a 1D-X and i believe i will own one in 5-6 years from now because of newer models and price reductions.

Some people (a lot) make more than others? Just guessing. Some people are also a lot more frugal and save their money for such times when there is something that they REALLY want. I can't say that I'm in either group. Although, I do make decent money. $7-8K for a body isn't something I consider worthwhile. I would rather spend the money on glass and other peripherals.

Some people just have more disposable income than others and different priorities. Some people drive BMW's while others the Focus...no different with camera gear.

I don't own a 1dx, and it's not on my radar to try to own one, but I think you can answer the question. The 1dx is an expensive camera, and most people (99.5%) don't have that kind of cach lying around. So, most make the 1dx purchase like everyone one else; though lines of credit. As to how someone can afford a camera in the pricerange, well, that's going to be subjective and open to opinion.

What is it about the 1D-X that you think you need to ,make you a good photographer ?? Like others have said some people have a bit more money then others. Why dont you look at something like 1DS II, great camara for 1/3 of the price , thats if you want to stay with the 1 series bodies

- It really isn't your business, but I understand the question and others will certainly tell you how they fund the camera. Since I invented the post-it note, I am using those continuing royalties to buy my equipment.

- I daresay a majority of 1DX owners here on the boards are hobbyists or part-time paid photographers, because the ones that are very professional usually don't have time to sit around on the boards.

- How is this unlike any other hobby? If you get into model railroading, or gas powered airplanes, or are a gear-head, the 1DX looks cheap compared to those hobbies. Hopefully folks first pay their debts, then take the remainder and prioritize the money across family, utilities, starbucks, phone, food, charities, church, and hobbies. Sometimes, maybe unfortunately, one gives in to another.

- Why exactly do you want a 1DX? Is your current equipment holding you back in some way, and are you losing revenue due to the hurdles of your current equipment? Have you considered something like the 6D or 5D3? If you cannot really quantify why you will have to save and save to get the 1DX, other than "just because others have them" and "I want one", then you have answered your own question. You will do what you need to in order to save up enough to pay for a 1DX, and others just reach that time sooner than others.

- I like the 1D series, having had several 1D3s and a 1D4, and can afford a 1DX, but after playing with the 5D3, I am not sure exactly what the extra $2800 or so would get me with the 1DX, personally.

- You have nearly $2000 in equipment now, and I expect there are those on the boards that would like to know how you have been able to afford that, as they are only able to get a rebel and a kit lens for now.

- Have you tried to use your equipment in such a way to earn income from it so that you can afford the 1DX sooner? Do senior portraits, baby pics, poster prints, etc? Sometimes you can use your existing equipment to help you leapfrog up to another system.

I teach violin to a family with 6 kids. The mom is a cardiologist, she shot a 1Ds since they first came out- ballet recitals, gymnastics, soccer, vacations. She wore it out, the 1Dx came out and she bought it as soon as it was available. She uses it with a 70-200/2.8L IS, taking action pictures in mostly horrible light, and I can't think of another body that gives her a better chance.

Total amateur, makes very little use of what the camera is able to do. But you know what? She loves it. As long as she still has money to "waste" on violin lessons for six kids, who am I to say that she is using her money wrong?

There is another way. I wait to buy bodies when they are superseded by new models. I have done this with most "want" items my whole life (cars, by the way, are a want item unless we are talking about a Toyota Corolla or a work truck. I have only bought one car on credit ever), and it has given me the resources at this point to be able to afford to make choices now. Be patient, be disciplined- this is out of fashion. The last sentence to your original post is the key, unless you too are a cardiologist soccer mom with money to burn.

I can't. But I wouldn't buy one even if I could. I wouldn't know what to do with it. If I had some extra cash I would buy a 5DIII . . . . Or a Leica ME.

Yeas i want the 1D-X but not because of the obvious reason, just beacause it's so damn sexey and feels like the ultimate BEAST among cameras.
I love my 1Ds and would never want to trade it, it's the body that attracts me.
The 1Ds is holding me back when it comes to fps and iso, i complement this with my 60D but i would still like to have (in my opinion) the ultimate camera and everything in one body.

I just want it, like some people want a bobber motorcycle or a lambourghini when they could get a Volvo and a Kawasaki for less money.

I've had much more gear than that but all that together are still not close to 7K, some of the money comes from photograph jobs and some i have saved up.

Telling me it's no business of mine or rude for asking is kinda silly, it feels like just because him or her are filthy rich then one can't not ask about money. Typical rich thing?
It was just a question and although 7k isent much money when compared (everything is relative..ofcourse) it's still a HUGE amount of money to spend on a camera, but sure.. having motoX as a hobby probably costs way more.

I think it is all about priorities.. I'm sure there are people wondering how you can afford a Ds, a 60D and the lenses you have.. Your answer might be the same as the answer of the people you ask the question on how they can afford a D-x. YOU believe it is worth the money.

I'm retired and would have no problem picking up a 1DX, if there was a reason to do so. My 60D is all that I require.
