So i just doing a photo shoot for my company today and my mirror decided it wanted to literally come out of my camera... I was shooting and while looking through the view finder i noticed half of it was black. I looked over the lens and then took a shot to see if it would shoot. As soon as i did that the camera made a horrible noise. I instantly turned it off and took my lens off of the body only to have my mirror fall out of the camera.

Has this happened to anyone else? If so, is there a way to fix this at home? Or am i going to have to send it into canon? Any insight on this would be great.

That's not something you're going to fix yourself, but I believe Canon still fixes it for free. They reenforce the mirror assembly so it will not happen again.

Sorry to hear about that. Send it to Canon it's a free fix. I sent my 5Dc to Canon before mine fell off as a precaution. They put some sort of brace to hold in place.

Yep, it's a common problem. Send it in.

Canon will usually fix it at no charge.

I hope you didn't damage anything else, taking a shot with that mirror flopping around loose in there. Canon might not cover other damage, beyond securing the mirror back in place.

Well, let's "assume" that the camera was configured to take multiple shots - then the user can't be expected to be quick enough to react before the camera takes that extra shot. In short, Canon can't hunt someone for damages caused by that flapping mirror - it's their fault that the mirror did fail as it did.

this happened to me today on a job. I didn't have a backup so I superglued the mirror to the paper mask, and the mask to the plastic mirror tray. So far, touch wood, it seems to be working OK, but I'll take a backup camera tomorrow!

Can't see how the mirror was held in, seems like there's no clip or anything at all.

Sounds like a super sketchy way to temporarily fix the problem. Superglue inside the camera sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

Yes, disaster happen sometimes.
After the mirror of my EOS 5D fell off, I measured it to find a good 100% mirror replacement - and took some Gaffa tape to fix it:

When I found a new donor mirror I took super glue as well. This was a year ago, and the camera works very well - and I love the brighter viewfinder for manual focussing (external link):)

I'm glad it's working for you but I would NEVER undertake a DIY project of that scale to fix a problem that Canon will fix for free, including shipping both ways.

yr right, but had no choice at the time. I had to pick a glue so I could keep working. Epoxy - too thick and too slow, contact - too thick. I didn't want to raise the mirror and screw up the focus.

The main worry with superglue is getting the vapor residue clouding the mirror, but it seems to be working fine, so I guess I was lucky (so far!)
