I've noticed that my burst rate on the memory cards I have is dropping, it was once 13 on the 5D2 and around 11 to 12 on the 50D. Is this a sign the cards are wearing out/failing?

If you tested burst rate at ISO 100, and later at ISO 1600, the ISO 1600 JPG files are larger because they have more noise and cannot compress data as much as ISO 100 due to the noise...so your number of photos before filling the buffer is smaller with higher ISO! Of if you used ISO 100 for both tests, if test 1 was aimed at a blank smooth wall while test 2 was aim at a highly textured wall, test 2 files would be bigger than test 1 because there is more detail to be stored. good info, i wouldnt have thought of that.
