Hello everyone, been a week or so since I last posted.

Happy Birthday Kirst! (weehee - hooping and hollering and all that jazz)

Spent my weekend just out of Thames, was hoping to get a few good shots of mine shafts etc - but couldn't really get what I wanted due to weather etc. Here's a couple I did manage to get.

And my favourite from the weekend......

http://www.neutraldensity.co.nz/images/final/570_800.jpg (external link)

It's been oversharpened due to my web upload routine (I must get around to turning off the sharpener at some stage). I was very pleased with the colours etc. The cat (named Alley) was a real laugh, she follows her owners when they go for a walk on the beach - just like a dog would. She's always a great conversation point for those who haven't seen her out on the beach for a stroll before. No flash used in the shot. I may repost it on my website without the destructive sharpening at some stage. The original is nice and sharp.

Having been away from this thread for a little while haven't got time to say "Wow" to all the images that have been posted from recent days - so here's a collective "Wow" for you all. Wow!

Cliff

Great capture. Love the rays of light. I havnt been out that way for years.

OOh, more happy birthdays - thanks guys :D
I still have them coming in from Auz, America, Scotland, Wellington.. etc :)

Had a fab dinner, with not even an ounce of a sore head. I woke at 5am though, no clue why.

Anyway - all pics posted by Warren, Tony and Cliff are outstanding. Good work guys.
More reason for me never to post any

:) I'm not a cat fan, but just love the clarity of these shots. What gear/settings?

LOL only my modest 350d, kit 18-55mm zoom and auto P mode, backlit with daylight (have to be quick with her cos shes a feral kitten we have tamed, and shes not too sure about anything yet)

You pair (ya bast****) have single handedly put the tingle factor into living down there! How 'kin cool are those shots!?!?! Seriously, we live two hours from the Highlands of Scotland here, and I love it, but seeing stuff like that just makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck and makes me itching to get down there and get the camera out.

I shall be requiring tour guides when I arrive! :p

then you will have to move to auckland - their recent run of shots comes from our local west coast

Thanks Kirst. Im working out where I want to go today.
There is something to be said about going to a place for the first time. You seem to see so much more, In fact to much.

I got so many keepers from last night but I also need to learn more about focusing on fast moving objects and how to track

I should also take vertical panos not horozontial, they look to long and skinny.
Should get 1 printed out see what it looks like.

Hey Wazza, that Maori bay shot is a knockout. Awesome work.

Likewise Tony.

You guys should be selling this stuff by walking door to door if you have to. I'm sure you'd get some takers.

Great capture. Love the rays of light. I havnt been out that way for years.

It's funny how a shot opportunity often just hits you unexpectidly. So many times the shots I end up getting are absolutely not what I set out to get. I was actually coming down from the bush after some rather unsuccessful atempts at getting some 'dramatic' mine shaft shots when I happened to spy the sunset doing it's thing through the clouds - I was actually on my way to the cemetary as there's some real cool stuff there.

I ended up spending half an hour or so on the beach before I got to the cemetary - which by that stage had too little light for what I was hoping to shoot. Cool cemetary though - could be quite scary if that sort of thing bothers you.

I'll head back there in a month or so as there's still so much more to shoot. If i get anything worthy of note, I'll post it here.

One of the roads I walked up to get shots was the road (our older users may remember) that Sven Hoglin was apparently killed on (remember the Heidi Pakkinen and Sven Hoglin murders? - two Swedish tourists). Kind of spooky when you think of that as it's starting to get dark....hehe.

Knowing the settings won't help you much! Asking why he took that shot from that position, at that time, and why he framed it like that will be more useful. Knowing that and putting the camera in auto mode will give you a better result that duplicating his exposure settings.
