Knowing the settings won't help you much! Asking why he took that shot from that position, at that time, and why he framed it like that will be more useful. Knowing that and putting the camera in auto mode will give you a better result that duplicating his exposure settings.

I dont fully agree. Knowing the settings helps you understand how the effect is acheived. Then you can ask the whys

After all Wazza told me what settings he used I then tryed the same and hey "it works" The composition was then up to me.

You're on, May is good for me also. Definitely keen for some weekend shoots.

Why not?

Let's discuss it closer to time. The rest of April is a rush for me, so I won't be travelling too far from home in the next few weeks. But very keen to sod off somewhere else in May for a few days.

My brother tried to sell me a 750GB HDD for me PC last night. He's keen on me having a Terrabyte of space
I forced him down to a 320GB.
I may even splash out and buy a flash today - haven't decided. The bank keeps trying to give me money (but never a CC - go figure). I need one for the Indian wedding next week.

You blokes enjoy the sodding off of sorts in May or whenever you go. A bit of a male bonding never hurt anyone ;) What goes on tour and all that

Also agree on setting mimicing. With drifting, I often had identical settings to Warren, but his style sometimes differed greatly to mine. And of course his ability, gear...

Anyway - lovely day out there eh

I'm not interested in copying what he did and going and sitting in the exact spot he did - i'm more curious as to what kind of ISO, aperture and shutter speed he had to get that kind of image, purely out of interest! Is that a crime ? I thought that was the whole point of sharing an image - to also share how you captured it......

If I was using Opera I could look for myself - but I dont, so I was just curious....

Nothing wrong in that, that's the only way I even managed to get a little decent in what I was shooting :)

Are you saying Wazza's image is good because he got the exposure right? I would've thought it was his talent for composition, not the trivial details that most cameras can do ok on auto. Nothing wrong with wanting to know the exif, but I seriously doubt that will help you make images anything like his. Knowing exactly when and where he took the shot is also irrelevant, what's important is why he chose that time and place, and why he composed it as he did.

Now Wazza being able to explain what I suggested asking... that's the hard bit.

LOL only my modest 350d, kit 18-55mm zoom and auto P mode, backlit with daylight (have to be quick with her cos shes a feral kitten we have tamed, and shes not too sure about anything yet)

then you will have to move to auckland - their recent run of shots comes from our local west coast

We have a cat like that.
Have had her 4 years now & she is quite comfortable with us, but gets scared extremely easily with noises or movement or unexpected things.

I agree that it can help to know. Particularly for action shots.

Peter, I've never shot in the snow before. How difficult is it to get the balance right between the snow/trees/sky? Any particular tricks (ND grad filters etc), or do you just keep changing exposures (or through bracketing) to get the shot you want?

By the way I love the creek winding away from you in that shot, neat composition. The fact that it starts at the corner of the frame works for me.
