have a look at this guys night photography: its really stunning especially the one from mt kilimanjaro

also, seems to be a number of people online who have used canons for 12 hour exposures and just say you need an external power source cos the battery will go flat

Half hour exposure but alas I don't have a flash, let alone a half hour one!!

That's called a torch!

you know I am worried that doing a long exposure might damage the sensor, over heating and stuff

Where do you figure the heat's coming from? Stop worrying.

Those are cool!

Can anyone answer how with such a long exposure, the pic of the tent, the tent doesn't get blown out? (I'm assuming it's about a 15 min or so exp) Or is it just that the light sources for this type of photography are always really really dim?

wow, your right that one from kilimangjaro looks really cool. a 3.5 hour exposure wow, that a long one.

Tim, I remember reading long ago about one of the effects of noise in long exposure shots being created the increase of head generated thou the sensor. I am sure that someone would have posted something about it creating problems or something. Who knows, it would have been in 03 sometime. I guess the idea has stuck with me.

#1 is an oxymoron!
It's dramatic, yet peaceful all at the same time.
The water haze is so dreamy, it almost looks like the nesting place is above the clouds.
Fabulous stuff, Tony :)

Holy crap, number 1 is the bee's knees. Nice work Tony. I cannot wait to bang heads with you when we go on a trip. Always good to see how the other works.

The long exposure will be something I develop. Gannets are done for a while. 2 Days in a row is a bit much even for me. But Im glad I went and happy with the result. I was more prepared and focused. Researched what I need to change and how.

Try focusing a on bird that big and that fast at 600mm. I found I just picked a bird out of the air and tracked it

yeah ive read the same thing, search on google and see what you come up with: one please i read said film has a problem where it ecomes less and less sensitive after long exposures to you have to expose the last part longer than you expected, and digital gets noisy
