Hell I would be on of the most motivated people here. Look at what I did with glamour. I busted my butt and made it work. Ive spendt well ove $25k. When I go out my bag is worth well over $15k.

I WILL Suceed. BUT I also believe that life often uses orange lights. WAIT not just yet. Your time is yet to come.
It is during this time I prepare for what I dont know. Thus Im trying my hand at all sorts of photography. Always learning always seeing.

When the time is right. You will see me move mountains. Nothing will get in my way.

So it's not really the lack of motivation, but it's more the "I don't know if i want to"? Is that fair comment on my part?

that too will be a fair comment. but also don't forget that it takes a lot of energy to do what your doing. some people just don't have that. hence always dreaming.

but I have never really known what I wonted. most of the time I just go with the flow.

Absolutely agree with that. I wax and wane on the energy side of things all the time. Easy to feel like chucking it in when you get one setback after another - especially when hopes are high upon starting out.

That was partly the reason I decided to get people around me to help me with the energy side of things. In fact, it is the reason I joined this forum. Like minded folk and all. You can feed off others who are trying to do the same thing - it helps to keep me going when it all sucks. Effort - yep, heaps.

Thanks,

Cliff

I learnt a long time ago lemons into lemonade. I thought that when a back surgeon gave me a 50/50 change of been able to do manual labour again.
My whole life of working outdoors closed when the damage to my back was not able to be fixed.

The lemonade was the detirmination to work with computers. Door after door slamed shut in my face. Then 1 opened and it was all I needed.

I see me as I close my eyes in the wild South Island, snow capped mountains in front of me with a camera because someone has paid me to be there. I will sit down have a smoke and smile to myself that I never stopped believing.

Interesting discussion.

I think everyone struggles with motivation at times. For me, at the moment, work is a struggle to get motivated, various issues, cash flow problems, lack of good staff, doing all the paper work without support, not enough hours in the day etc all of those things.
I've often thought about doing other things, been in this business nearly 20 years.

However, I look back, see what I started with and think I've had a good life so far, not brilliantly sucessful but comfortable with my lifestyle. I've trained apprentices in the past who have gone on to being very sucessful & fairly wealthy, I've got friends in the same situation but it all comes at a price. I look at the hours that these guys have put in and the strain that it has put onto their families and/or delayed the start of families etc and wonder if it was worth it. I'm pleased I have gone down my path but it often makes you wonder what if?.

I think you've just got to be comfortable with what you are doing as long as it is in accordance with your aims, however, I like Tony's analagy of the traffic lights, hold on orange but if/when you get the green (your own personal circumstances), then go for it.

Tony - I know this lady - Rosita Manning - http://photo-trio.co.nz/mann/rosita.htm (external link)

She does product and still work as you can see on the above page.. means you could stay at home too! :) She supplies images internationally by request and this happens very regularly for her ...

I purchased a book on digital wedding photography today and one of the first things it says if you're looking to get into any photography business and are considering classes to learn etc - the last class you should learn is photography so they say. The first is business management, followed by marking/advertising, then web design and perhaps art and lastly photography... without strong business sense you may be a good photographer, but you will have nothing.

Tony even though you dont have a business idea as such - i strongly recommend the course Aaron and I are doing and also SS is just finishing.. its free and is in Small business management through Te Wananga o Aotearoa in Mangere.. a night course once a week for 36 weeks - but it makes you think about certain things you may not have even considered... forces you to have goals and strategies and all that kind of stuff...

what have you got to lose ?

I think if anyone here wants to get into proffesional photography, Tim is he man to look at as an example.

Very average photographer (by his own admission) but a very good business man.
When he first joined this forum he knew nothing about photography, but a bit about how to start and run a business.
So he started a business and learned what he needed to know about photography along the way.
Now he's still an average photographer, but doing quite well out of the photography.

I think most of us have more than enough photography knowledge, skills, and equipment to be professional photographers. What we all appear to lack is the business sense and knowledge.
Fortunately its far easier IMO to gain business skills than it is talent for photography.

So long and thanks for all the flash

True what you say Moppie about business savvy...
And when there's an institution out there offering a free course that is government funded then you have no excuse not to learn! :) It covers all things from management, to financial, to marketing, to law, to people & HR... :)

Note the words

business = skills
photography = talent

I am inclined to agree. I dont have a musical bone in my body. I pay to listen to those who do.

How many people out wish they could take photos like we do?

Yeah, umm... nah.

It dosn't matter whether or not you like him or his work, the simple fact is he is succesful at it.
He's living proof that you need to understand how to run a business, possibly more than you need to understand photography.

Of course you get by being a talanented photographer, and to make the really, really big bucks I think you need to be. But you also need to understand business. :)

Nothing to do with my feelings about him or his work. I just don't believe he acts professionally (especially when you can link his name with this forum). I also don't believe he knows how to best exploit the market. In short I don't percieve him as successful, but feel I can and have learnt more from his mistakes than anything else.
