. . .

I have no idea if I'll make it to where I am aiming - but why should my uncertainty stop me from trying? What physical reason does it give me to not try? None that I can see.

Feel free to take me up on any of the above. Happy to discuss it via PM, or however you want to.

Cliff

Cliff, valid thoughts. I would rather be a "loser" and learned something rather than being "safe" on the side without knowing whether I could have won...

There are however those of us who have other priorities and/or responsibilities in life, be it family, career, or whatnot which impede the speed in which they are able to achieve their goals. and at times, one or all of these priorities may seem like excuses.

There are times that I wish I was single again... to purchase a new set of mags for the car, a new camera body, etc... Things I could probably do even these days... However, family too comes first.

Like Tony, I have a mortgage, 2 sons going to school, paying for orthodontic braces... flying "home" to visit family every so often... so, I need to take things slower than most when it comes to "achieving" my goals.

Bottom line is, we all have our ways and means of getting to where we want to be... not just at the speed that some have achieved.

From what I see, Tony is in a state of uncertainty, not knowing fully well where he is heading for, and possibly not knowing (yet) how to achieve what he is aiming for. But I'm sure, when the light turns green he will be burning rubber...

That is the beauty of this forum -- we draw strength, and learn from others' experiences.

Ah just uninspired about photo taking at the moment. Not really unhappy about it, as I have been busy doing other things, which I am enjoying. Getting a bit fitter, losing some weight, and getting to know my wife better etc. So I've been taking a bit of a break from photography, and are just starting to come back to it. Photography has only ever been a hobby for me, something I do for fun. I have no desire to go pro or anything like it. If someone wants to pay me for a photo I take, great. If not, I don't really care. So if I get uninspired and feel like doing something else for a while, it's no problem for me.

You're not alone... we need to do a mini... when Tina gets back from Manila! Difficult playing Mr. Mom;)

Interesting discussion.

... I'm pleased I have gone down my path but it often makes you wonder what if?.

I think you've just got to be comfortable with what you are doing as long as it is in accordance with your aims, however, I like Tony's analagy of the traffic lights, hold on orange but if/when you get the green (your own personal circumstances), then go for it.

Mark, I can relate. And like you, I have asked the question, what if?... and it boils down to being happy with what you've got and/or making the most of it... if and when the circumstance present themselves.

I've learned that there is no right or wrong answer in ones approach to life -- we all approach it differently and it is what makes this forum interesting... it is what makes life interesting.

Awesome reply. Thanks for adding to the discussion.

Don't get me wrong either. I'm no "story of success" at this stage. Far from it. My real goal feels miles off......and it still is. I am still doing IT, but have a few days a week allocated to running around shooting stuff for the magazine. So 3 days IT, two days Photos. It's a good start for me towards full time photography.

It's always interesting being on the other side of the fence. You mention the "oh to be single again" thing. I see people who have families and appear, at least to me, to have it all together. Their lives look 'nice' to me. I envy them. I wish sometimes I had made those choices myself. God knows I have had the opportunities. Stop depressing me! :)

Thanks again for the feedback.

Life is a journey... most take the the safe route, whilst others prefer the back roads with its twists and turns, then some create their own paths... some may speed like a bat out of hell, others we may pass on the passing lanes... some content with sticking to the dictated speed limit...

what matters is that we keep moving forward, checking our rear view mirrors every once in a while to remember where we've come from, but not losing sight of where we want to be... whilst enjoying the breeze that blows through the windows and our hair (or what is left of it,) soaking up the beauty and scenery of the places we pass through...

Good night.

Tony even though you dont have a business idea as such - i strongly recommend the course Aaron and I are doing and also SS is just finishing.. its free and is in Small business management through Te Wananga o Aotearoa in Mangere.. a night course once a week for 36 weeks - but it makes you think about certain things you may not have even considered... forces you to have goals and strategies and all that kind of stuff...

what have you got to lose ?

also you don't have to do the contact course (1 night a week) you can join the full correspondence one with the option to meet up one night a week if you want the extra tutor input

i am very fortunate in my tutors: i found i was falling behind my course last december due to time, and couldn't get to most of the optional night classes due to kids, so i pulled out of the course... only to receive a phone call from my tutor who arranged with me to visit once a week at my home to help me get it done faster (it goes slowly when you're self-learning) because their focus is on getting me finished, not on getting bums on seats at the start so they get funding

now i'm almost done:-) and i certainly feel a lot more confident about the business admin side of things, and getting a grasp on the marketing side too
i had vague ideas about products and prices before i started but the course forces you to look at it, make choices, and give time frames for starting each segment which is very helpful

Hi everyone, I'm back from my Italian holiday.
I just had about an hours scan of the nearly 100 pages of posts since I left, Gave up on the last few days.
Holiday was great, weather was pretty crap though. Loads of cold rain, which is great when you are camping with kids.
Never the less, I got a bit of good windsurfing, some good mountain biking, and climbed a mountain or two. I even took a few pictures! Camera worked after the repairs. Even after I cleaned it, my sensor is still pretty grubby. I think my 17-85 is working better than it used to.
I'll post some pictures later.

the institution is Te Wananga O Aotearoa (external link) (link to course info)
there are 2 modes for the course: contact (which serra and aaron are doing) and mixed-mode, which i am doing. the mixed mode course is offered from the north shore campus, next to the canon building LOL (but of course since its correspondence, you don't have to live on the shore)
the contact course can be offered at manukau or north shore.

for the contact course, \attendance 1 night a week is compulsory.
for the mixed-mode course, your have the option to attend a 'class' tutorial on the upcoming work one night per week, or, you can stay home and do it all there. they post each module to you as you complete the last. and you are entitled to direct tutor contact including visits if you get stuck.

the course is completely free and they give you paper, pens, calculator, books, dvd...etc - oh and they didnt enforce the entry criteria - id never done any business training before this

youd make a far better margin if you did it yourself, on the off time when youre not shooting

i read an article which said photo marketing is not about pushing, its about pulling: passive marketing whre you simple display the work in as many ways as possible and let it sell itself
