However there are a number of natural things that can kill our modem world.

teresa would consider that a compliment... ;)

Do you HAVE to get a euro? Jappas are gerally better built, and cost less to repair/maintain.

but non-jappas are a nicer drive

when i worked in the auto-services industry, i drove around about 2000 cars in a couple of years, all different makes and models, new, used, light commercial to recreational, executive to budget...

and the 2 nicest drives were (remember im a ford girl)

VW Golf 6-speed stick
AUDI A6 5-speed stick

then some way behind them was honda prelude (in the small car range)

worst...drive...ever... was holden barina and mitsi GTO (tied for last place)

The Warehouse Flagship Car award goes to: hyundai accent
Nissan was the best 4WD, Toyota was the worst
and the most expensive holden i drove (Senator customised brand new rrp approx $130,000) was crap compared to the 6 year old supercharged SS commodore with 6-speed stick
i never drove: a porsche, a ferrari, a corvette or a lamborghini

For that money, in my opinion you'd be mad not to buy a pc. A pc will run vista (vista media centre is awesome) well for that money if you use pricespy, and fit it into a small form factor case.

I already have a pc that I connect to my TV. it runs media portal, (which is free) but the problem is I have a 32" CRT Widescreen TV. now it would be nice to have a TV that does HD 720p or something like that. but that is close to 3k. the only thing that I have used it for is playing back the movies and tv shows I have in avi format. But they are all on disk anyway and I can use that at the moment to play back those files.

so at the moment I have got sky, dvd player, vcr and a dvd player connected to the TV. I would just like 1, but reduce that number is my goal.

When I get a job the first thing I am going to do is replace my car, with an audi a3 or a4 t :)

corvettes are over rated anyway. anything that comes out of the US normally isn't that good anyway. all designed for a road with no curves, and they normally have cars with out them either.

btw I have a Logitech momo steering wheel for sale, it's force feed back :) pm if your interested.

That's subjective.

So, bin the dvd player and vcr. Put a dvd drive, tv tuner card, and 300GB hdd in the pc - you're away laughing. BTW, 1080p plasma can be had for under 2.5k...

Don't have to, keeping an open mind as possible but am leaning that way mainly due to safety really. Being less than 700mm away from the point of impact isn't particularly nice - especially when your child is involved. As it happened, the 4WD behind us somehow managed to swerve into the middle lane (while all locked up - must have decent ABS) if it had hit us then I'd likely have far more problems than just time off due to a minor photography accident. As it was, the car behind the 4WD didn't see us nearly stopped until the last second - and launched little VW to it's doom.
so within reason, I don't care about cost.

funny how closing Euro boots go "clunk" and Jappa's go "pting"
I had a friend in Ausy get her Barina hit from behind & shunted over the side of a hill and the description reading "it just fell to bits around us" doesn't instill any sense of confidence.

Totaly agree!
European cars are finaly starting to make a real showing in the NZ market, thanks to them making a real showing in Japan.
Hopefuly Kiwis will soon get to see just how over rated many of them are, and realise just how good we have had it for so long with our Japanese imports.

European cars a much like American ones, built for a closed and controlled market, where only a small number of corperates control a large number of brands. The Market is heavily controlled with marketing and a motoring press kept on a short leash by corperate PR guys.
The public get told what to buy, and they go out and buy thinking that because its made there it must be the best in the world. They buy gadgets and marketing spin over good engineering and modern design.
Of course European cars and American cars are quite different, but then so our thier cultures. And of course there are plenty of exceptions to the mass produced sludge on both sides of the atlantic.

The Japanese generaly take a different approach, since they are selling to a truely global market and are trying to compete with a large number of other manufactors. They don't break the world down into Ford, GM, and VAG. They add to it Toyota, Honda, Mitsubishi to go along with remaining european independants Daimler/Chrsler, BMW, and Renult/Nissan, all of whom make cars that are generaly exceptions to the sludge, and that are all sold on a truely global scale where the compete with each other, and ignore the sludge.
(Current top exception to the sludge is Fords Focus/Mazda 3)

Bull****.
That would mean you had to drive 3 cars a day working 300 days a year.
Its not possible to get a good apprectation of a car based on a short drive around a car park.
Of course the idea that you managed to find and drive 2000 unique models of car...............

For the record, the best car I'v ever driven: A S4 lotus Esprit Turbo, followed by a Honda Civic SiR.
The worst car I'v ever driven: To many to name, but a VW Golf is up there with an S class Mercedes and several import Toyotas.

So long and thanks for all the flash

well it's official. the vw is "beyond economic repair" ( to turn this into a photo discussion again see: https://photography-on-the.net …p=3322290&postcount=24380 )
had a quick look at replacements today. has anyone anything usefull to say about either VW Golf / Audi A3 / Opel Astras? (say 1999-2002 5 door hatches given their pricerange) good/bad/indifferent?

Opel Astra - i have one of those - 2004 model - got from Japan for 8k all up -- (including shipping tax and rego) they go very well for the size and great around town.. surprisingly big boot space. good for a family trip away..

golf - hairdressers car,, A3 nice car but expensive if they break..
