there is a simpler way of doing it. if you have the my document folder on your desktop or even on your start menu you can right lick on it and then click on location, bingo, change the location here and then you can point it to another drive or what ever.

True I forgot about that but you can't redirect the My Music, My Pictures and My Movies but right clicking on it

while that is true and it would be nice to have the option of disabling these folder. They follow the My Documents folder around.

move the above folder and everything else will follow.

that almost sounds like, build it and they will come.

***geek question alert***
how many folks move the WinXP "documents & settings" folders to another drive for ease of backup? if so, what method of moving sometime after installation is idiotproof?

well enough ppl have said how to do it so i wont repeat them - ive done it myself using the properties window ever since i can remember

the reason why i do it is not just for backup ease, but so that all my own files are stored on a usb external drive - so if my laptop needs a rebuild or (heaven forbid) has to go in for repairs - i can just unplug all my stuff and stick it straight into another usb and keep working, and i dont have to be concerned that my files might get wiped or damaged by any procedures that are carried out on my main system drive

i dont however put everything into the my docs folder - my photos have their own root folder on a separate usb external drive, for example

and yes those compulsory app folders are annoying - why cant windows put them all into the documents and settings app data folder? or ASK me where i want them?

HAHAHA 'newbie wobble board'
2 or more newbies have to sing tie me kangaroo down as a harmonised duet whilst ACCOMPANYING themselves on the wobble board

in fact what you are watching is the season that was shown at the start of the year. the next season should be starting in the next month or two.

I try to stay on top of these things so I can get them from a friend I have never meet, in fact this guy doesn't even know we are friends. ;)

I thought we were finally seeing the current season?

Do not go into the registry.

If you're using XP Pro, use the local group policy editor (start - run - gpedit.msc). There is an option for what to do with existing files (ie move/leave etc) from memory.
You can also redirect other useful things, like the program files folder.

99% of apps out there use the correct variable when trying to write to a user's folder, so if it is correctly redirected you will have very few problems. Better the apps are writing to user space, than system space too :D

As said several times above...
Right-click "My Documents", Properties, "Move to another folder thingy".
Done.
Been there since Win98.

But they're automatically done when the My Documents is done.
