NZShrimper, let me introduce you to the histogram (external link). Your 2nd effort is horribly underexposed, worse than your first.

Here's my effort, not near as good as I could do sobre, from a color photo, and experimental rather than what i'd call a final effort. I fixed the levels, did a lasso around the boy with a 150px feather, inverted the selection, use levels to apply a mild vignette, then applied a 2px gaussian blur. Then I used the lens correction filter to apply a stronger vignette. Then I did levels again to fix what I broke, and increased the brightness. Probably other stuff I forgot too. Then I applied a layer style of inner glow, normal blend mode, black, and fiddled a bit. Then I made it sepia. I took a lot longer to type what I did than to do it. Final result attached. If you reproduce with a high res image use a 300px feather and I guess a 10-15px gaussian blur.

Look for scott kelby cs2 books, they're worth far more than you pay for them. Parts of the technique I used I learned from David Williams, an aussie photography, at an NZIPP conference recently. Amazing photographer, funny guy, I highly recommend seeing him or others speak if you get the chance, even if it costs you $100 per "show".

Funny, we spend all this money on expensive glass to avoid vinetting (amoung other things), then have to buy CS2 to add some back to our pictures:)

Heck Pete, you might as well order a container load!

Shona popped yet?

Looking that way! I may have to order in two lots to avoid the GST Police

Shona still hasn't popped. The mid wife stuffed up, she told us on Monday it would be the next three days, so we put life on hold, it has now been five days and we are not happy campers

I think if we did a poll on who owned what software they used, there would be some "interesting" results ;)

Just ordered a 17-55 F2.8 IS from WPS - $1699 including hood, a better price than Auckland camera! :) Just hope they can get one from Canon NZ before my wedding in two weeks.
