Well clean up done. Pulled a muscle in shoulder. Back is now aggrivated so looks like I will be limping tommorrow. How do we collect so much junk. Now I need to line my carport and get it all setup. Im going to take some photos of the progress.

Personally I would have gone for 3 exposures and blend. I find that the tobacco filter is good for sunsets and clouds, in places where it dosnt throw a cast as in your case on the white church.

I like the composition of the photo. You are right about getting the basics right.

Scott would that be a good spot for a bright moon light night?

I don't go for those blend/hdr things, they just don't look right to me. That sky needed more than just a different exposure, it was the most boring looking sky I have ever seen, and I like what the tobacco filter did for it, but not what it did to the church. I think the best thing to do for this shot would be set up the tripod and take one with the filter and one without as Pete suggested. Then just put the one without on a forground layer and cut it out as I did with my 2 different RAW conversions in this case.

It makes the PP process a lot easier if you get it right in the camera!

Could be a great spot on a still moonlit night, although I'm not sure I could find my way there in the dark. And I'm pretty sure the church is not lit.

That is really eye catching! Composition looks good to me, perhaps you could clone the wee bit of trees on the far left.

What happens if you take two shots, one with and one without the filter to enable the church not to become coloured? Not sure how much work that would be?

BTW where is that?

duplicate the layer and add a blue filter, might work, then mask it and take out the parts you don't want. you might have to play with the filter a bit, another way would be to desaturate the duplicate layer, this would defo work.

na we haven't made our minds up yet, un .. ahh. yeah the op is absolutely awesome, there's just a couple of factors top consider, but usually it isn't for such a totally insane itinary... as we worked on ships for a few years, we know what is entailed with the work etc. I've been offered a few contracts since being home but haven't taken a second thought on them, but i think that someone who mentioned it might be right, i might kick myself for the rest of my life with this one.

I like that. I think I tend to be lasy in my post processing. I want to get it as right as possible in camera, but that doesn't mean I can't PP it to get it better.

Watch out for version 1.1 soon.

Blended exposures is not the same as HDR. With blended exposures you mask and paint through the layers.

Lets face it trying to get 1 photo that has all the exposure right on everything is impossible.

I wonder if maybe a GND may have helped as well.
Oh Scott any of the family photos any good?

Yeah ok. What I did was actually blending 2 different RAW conversions, so I am a hipocrite! Wonder how they managed in the days of film?

Those photos were good thanks Tony. Except I hate the way I look in photos! Thats why I hold the camera!

Playing catch up...

Scott -- given that you are taking on board all the comments, I can foresee Ver 1.1 being enlarged and put into my lounge for everyone to see. I like what Mark did with PPing the shot. However, I am still trying to get my head around the tobacco filter part. Could an orange grad give you a better colour rendition? I am thinking of getting one to play with this Tuesday at AC... we can all have a play

Mark/MHP - Go for it!!! If we didn't have kids we probably would have jumped at an opportunity like it. As Tag says you can always jump ship if you don't like what you're seeing. Just don't forget us little folk and do post spectacular sunsets from whereever you are ;-)a

Tony -- I hope that your back/shoulder comes right soon. Besides, the kids wouldn't like to see the hunchback of Nortre Dame on their first day back at school ;-)a

John;)

For the trip to AC on Tuesday, so far:

Me: Multi-coated UV/Skylight filter/Cokin Orange Grad/Hotshoe bubble level
Scott: Hot shoe bubble level
Tony: Hot shoe bubble level

Anyone else? Again, for your guys out of Auckland I can post things for you at cost if you are interested. PM me. ;-)a
