If they don't I might be able to lend you bigma and even a 2x TC. Manual focus with the TC on though. It does take a fine picture...

OK, part 3:

I ran into some issues formatting my hard drive for use in the Storage Bank. The device is only compatible with Fat drive formats, and my disk was formatted as NTFS. You can use it as a portable hard drive in NTFS format, but it will not copy from the card reader to hard drive unless the drive is FAT of some description. Now that’s fine, but Windows XP has issues formatting a FAT32 partition over 32Gb and my drive is 40Gb. The cd supplied with the PSD has a utility which is supposed to format FAT32 partitions bigger than 32GB, but I couldn’t get it to work. I couldn’t create a partion smaller than the whole drive in the PSD either. Eventually I put the drive in another usb enclosure, created a 32Gb partition, and formatted it as FAT32, reinstalled the drive in the PSD, and that seems to be working. I can live with the smaller capacity, but will have more of a play later to see if I can get back the other 8Gb.

To test performance I dumped 187 RAW images onto a CF card and timed a download. That’s 1.48Gb. So far it has been running almost 15 minutes and I am going to bed.

More testing tomorrow, but it is not looking good at the moment!

Part 4.

To test performance I dumped 187 RAW images onto a CF card and timed a download. That’s 1.48Gb. It took around 30 minutes. (I say around because I got tired of waiting and left the room, when I came back it was finished.) Thats slow. I'd say a full 2Gb card would take around 40 minutes at that rate.

Battery life doesn't look too hot either. I doubt if you would get through 2 2Gb card before the battery runs out.

So, in conclusion, I would not recommend this device for "in the field" downloading of CF cards. It is just too slow, and battery life is unsufficient. If you wanted to make 2 copies of a 2Gb CF card to be safe it would take over an hour and you would probably run out of battery before the second copy was finished.

The 32Gb limit is a bit of a pain, but if I can find a Win98SE/WinME machine, apparently I can format the whole 40Gb disk with it.

I'm going to keep the device, because since I got my 2Gb CF I have not filled up both cards (1Gb + 2Gb) in a day out. And where this device will be usefull to me is when I am away for a couple of days or more with no computer, but access to power. I'll be able to download my pics overnight and have fresh CFs the next day. I'm going to try to get a cigarette lighter adapter for it too.

So if you already have a 2.5" HDD lying around, want a basic PSU, and can live with these limitations, for $25 why not? But if you want something to download in the field, and need something fast, save your money and get something else.

Thanks for that one Scott! Looks like I was lucky with my TM purchase for a PSD case... then again, I only have 20gb on it which is quite sufficient for a 2 month trip...

Interesting. Can't beat the price though! My two year old X's Drive does 1GB in 5 minutes, and a verify in another 5 minutes, battery life is good for at least 8 1GB downloads. It can format the drive too getting around the 32GB limit, however it costs $120US without postage and drive.

Would still work really well for holidays, esspecially where you have a mains supply, just do the download when you get back to the room at the end of the day, at that price you could get two for DR (BTW I am serious here, what happened if your drive got stolen/dropped/crashed on the last day of a holiday with several 1000 images on it?). Better than lugging a laptop around.

Cheers Scott!
If its safe to carry around while its down loading, then you could just let it run while you keep shooting, and power it off an external battery.
But I don't know a hell of a lot about lap top HDD's or how shock resistant they are.

Does anyone want a Nifty?
I think Glam is trying to increase their value in the market:

Nope I haven't done any tests yet. the closed focus point of the lens is 1.8m so I would need to print a big version of that test page.
