Part 4.
To test performance I dumped 187 RAW images onto a CF card and timed a download. That’s 1.48Gb. It took around 30 minutes. (I say around because I got tired of waiting and left the room, when I came back it was finished.) Thats slow. I'd say a full 2Gb card would take around 40 minutes at that rate.
Battery life doesn't look too hot either. I doubt if you would get through 2 2Gb card before the battery runs out.
So, in conclusion, I would not recommend this device for "in the field" downloading of CF cards. It is just too slow, and battery life is unsufficient. If you wanted to make 2 copies of a 2Gb CF card to be safe it would take over an hour and you would probably run out of battery before the second copy was finished.
The 32Gb limit is a bit of a pain, but if I can find a Win98SE/WinME machine, apparently I can format the whole 40Gb disk with it.
I'm going to keep the device, because since I got my 2Gb CF I have not filled up both cards (1Gb + 2Gb) in a day out. And where this device will be usefull to me is when I am away for a couple of days or more with no computer, but access to power. I'll be able to download my pics overnight and have fresh CFs the next day. I'm going to try to get a cigarette lighter adapter for it too.
So if you already have a 2.5" HDD lying around, want a basic PSU, and can live with these limitations, for $25 why not? But if you want something to download in the field, and need something fast, save your money and get something else.
