So Vitas on the way. Whos is upgrading and will you have to buy a new PC?

Im still working out what I will do. At this stage Im looking at holding fire. If anyone knows where I can get 2x1gig RAMBUS sticks from at a steal let me know, other wise I have to buy a whole new PC
Personally I would rather buy a "L" lens

Mark, got you PSD working yet? I'm having trouble getting the hard drive formatted.

I had the same problem so went to dos to try formating it

format x: /fs:fat

it took ages and didn't work so tried

format x: /fs:fat32

also took ages and didn't seem to work, I have reformated the drive in a usb enclosure as ntfs and the drive works fine, ended up going to bed and leaveing it will try again tonight

Why?
I don't really care about Vista, I know it won't run on my PC, but I also can't think of anything in it that I need. XP does more than I need.
Unless some really good Vista only content comes out Ill stick with XP and my old PC.
If some really good Vista pnly content does come out, then it will be time to upgrade, by which stage dual core and 64bit will be common and at a reasonable price, and Vista will be easy to get, if you know what I mean ;)

So long and thanks for all the flash

But I don't know a hell of a lot about lap top HDD's or how shock resistant they are.

Not very shock resistant whilst running, wouldn't want to be running around with one while downloading. Most 'portable' style drives park the heads after a few seconds of inactivity, the microdrives do after a few milliseconds.

Yep. Ran it up at home and here at work, lots of eyecandy, but that was about it. It uses over 500MB of RAM before loading any applications! It does have some speed enhancing features that about offset the loss from the heavier OS

The biggest negative is the licencing, my helpful MS guy here tells me that certain hardware changes such as a motherboard will require you to purchase a new licence, so there goes upgrades

If true it will put a LOT of people off.
I can't afford a whole new system every two years, so rely on being able to upgrade. If I can't do that then why would I want to pay for Vista?
Sounds like someone at MS has been sleeping with someone at Dell, as if their consumer machines weren't hard enough to upgrade already.

The "fringe" community should have a resolution for us by then ;)

The latest version of Fedora looks good, run WINE on that and you can keep all your favourite apps!

You need to get the machine up to spec for Vista so you can "evaulate" it for the school, oh and you need it before Vista comes out, as prices will all go up with demand ;)

EDIT: Actually if you need RAM build a case for running Virtual Machines, do that first then say you need more RAM, works most of the time :D

Just got another photo job to do, more product shooting, this time for a gormet bakery, loafs of bread, will contribute to that new lens :D

Looks like the old product shooting pipeline has reopened, a graphic artist I used to do product shooting for is back in business after starting a family.

I do have a tool at home to do that, the dirty way around it though is to kill the explorer process and restart it by starting a new process - explorer.exe
