don't show tony that, he might buy it just to see what it's like.

No need to - I have one:oops: It's available for play - we'll be in Ak on Sunday.

Last used for birds at the Mangere waste water treatment area. Massive DOF problem for birds, but quite acceptable for across-the-bay scenic shots.

How is it optically? And how did you find shooting at F8-16 all the time?

Tony is ok for glass for 2006. 2007 well lets see what Canon brings in Vagus in March

Ive got lightbulbs going off with this new book. This guy studied with Ansel Adams. The book is well written and he assumes you know very little about PP
its not a photoshop book but a workflow one. He explains why certian things are done in the order they are done in.

So from my point I have the equipment. I have the basics of photography and PP now it time to refine the craft.

The zone system is very intresting and I think once you get the hang of it it becomes second nature.

What can you expect for US$200! Asking NZ$400 is a bit much.

The aperture changes continuously as you zoom out. I used Av mode, but the Ap value cannot be set once the lens is attached. So the shutter controls the exposure.

At 1300mm, just finding the target is an achievement. And it probably needs two beanbags to hold it steady. At 650mm, it can be supported on a good tripod, but once extended, the camera also needs support and alignment.

My impression was that the lens has poor colour transmission.

So it actualy extends, rather being an internal zoom. I should have guessed as much for the price :)

I would hate to think how hard it to keep steady, maybe a mono-pod under the lens, and a tripod under the camera

Could be fun to have a play with on a day like today though, when theres lots of light.
But otherwise it must have very limited uses.

Hmmmm, had a quick google, this is yet another case of over inflated second hand prices. You can land a new one here for NZ$400 if you shop around.

Hand holding a Bigma at f/6.3 @ 500mm (as wide open as it will go at 500mm) is marginal at ISO100 on a bright sunny day. Rule of 1/focallength (*1.6 for APS-C) states you need to be shooting at around 1/2000 of a second at 1300mm to handhold, that at f/16 is going to need some sacrifice in ISO.

(runs away and finds online calculator)

At 1300mm f/16 1/2000s you need to be at ISO1600 on a bright sunny day
