I've been aware of one, possible breeding near a state park about 13 miles from here, but they are so elusive. Whenever I am fortunate enough to spot it, it goes from telephone pole to telephone pole with me following, and never close enough for a shot even if I would want one from a pole. Forty or so years ago they were quite common around here, but now it's a treat just to see one.
The other evening I headed to this spot and located 2 on 1 pole. One flew to parts unknown and the other one went pole hopping. I finally followed him to some dead trees and sat by the side of the road and just watched him. The only way to get closer would have been to brave tick infested weeds and i just didn't like that idea because I doubt he would have waited for me.
So I rested my camera in my open window and fired away. The center focus point almost completely covered the bird, he was that far away. I cropped out around 60% of the original to end up with these marginal shots. Once the ticks are gone for the year, I may go back and set up a blind closer to the trees and hope he returns and lands at a level not too extremely high.
If anyone has any Red-head shots they've got recently, feel free to piggy back on this thread. This bird is my new mission.
