Canon 1000mm lens?

I just finished watching a show on PBS with Art Wolfe claiming he was shooting with a 1000mm lens and 1.4 teleconverter. It was definitely a Canon lens because it was white like the L lenses but it didn't look any larger than the 600/f4. However, I can't find any info on the lens, not that I could afford it anyway. Just curious.

There was a 1200mm lens a 5.6L that I've seen youtube videos of so I wouldn't find it far fetched that there was a 1000mm L

possibly a 500 with a 2x?

He definitely said it was 1000mm plus the 1.4 for an effective 1400mm. Earlier in the show he mentioned he was shooting at 1000mm and I assumed it was the 500 plus 2x, but then he comes out with this claim.

After reading thru those responses, I'm inclined to believe the one figuring it was the 500 plus the 2X plus the 1.4X. Art should have been clearer on that instead of just saying 1000mm plus the 1.4X.

I didn't realize that PBS special was 4 years old.

Either that or he had no idea what he was talking about (hopefully no the case for someone with an expensive L lens) Any chance for a link to the video, and possibly a time in it that it comes up?

This guy would know what he was talking about. He's probably the most well known and published wildlife photographer in the country. He sells the DVD's off his site so you won't find an online video of his.

Just because it was white doesn't mean it was definitely a Canon lens, several other companies have made white lenses, including Nikon and Sigma. Anytime a lens may have issues with external heat, it is made as a white lens, regardless of company. Canon have more white lenses than other companies because they, uniquely, use fluorite elements in them, which are more heat sensitive.

Canon may well have extended it to other big lenses, as it looks more "Canon", but even they do (or at least did) it for heat reflection purposes.

OK, it wasn't a Nikon or Sigma white lens, because they never did a white 1000mm either (so far as I know). My point was simply that it is not a valid assumption that "it was a white lens, therefore it was definitely a Canon lens", as other manufacturers make / made white lenses. People use lenses made by other manufacturers on Canon all the time, you can get adapters to fit almost anything to a Canon camera, and old manual telephotos are a popular choice for many people due to the cost of a big L lens.

It probably was a Canon lens, and not 1000mm, I don't know, I haven't seen the clip. I was just stating that it doesn't HAVE to be a Canon because it is white.

A Century Precision Optics Tele Athenar 1000mm/5.6 should look longer than the 600/4.
I could imaging they have made some lenses in white color too.
Or a Cinetel 1000m/5.6 lens (not sure wheter these are made with EF mount).

Probably it was the EF 600mm/4 lens, and he told the 24x36mm equivalent focal length for crop camera?

I haven't seen that episode, but in all likelihood Art was either using an EF 600/4 with a 1.4X or an 800/5.6 with a 1.4X, and referring to the combination as "about 1000mm".

Art does shoot with Canon gear.... Full frame 5DIII camera the last I heard, though he was considering a switch to 1DX. He primarily uses 16-35/2.8 and 70-200/2.8 zooms, but sometimes longer primes, too. I thought his longest primes were a 400/4 DO and a 500/4 IS, the latter sometimes used with 1.4X.

Was it this? Looks to me like a 400mm f/2.8 with both 2.0 and 1.4 extenders, perhaps. 1120mm?
