In March 2014 my mother and I are going to the Dominican Republic to snorkel with the Humpback Whales. I’ve started to research cameras to find the one that’ll fit my needs best. I’ll be bringing my DSLR for the out of water shots, but will not be bringing it into the water. I cannot afford to get a real underwater housing for it so I’d be limited using one of those bag type of housings which just makes me nervous.

I’ve looked at several different underwater cameras and finally decided on the Panasonic Lumix TS5… until last night! I was reading more reviews and read that this camera should not be used for any more than 60 minutes at a time underwater. That just won’t work for me. So, now the search is on once again.

I’m looking at the Canon Powershot D20 now. Do any of you use this camera? Have you used it to snorkel/swim with wildlife (especially whales or sharks) and could you post some sample shots? Does this camera have the same 60 minute rule? I’m not sure if that’s the norm for underwater cameras or not.

Other cameras I’ve been looking at are the Nikon AW110 and Pentax WG-3. Do any of you have any information on either of these that should eliminate them from my search? There are so many cameras out there and this is all pretty overwhelming for me! Any help you can off would be GREATLY appreciated!

I do not have any of the small "tough" and "waterproof" cameras, but I thought you might be interested in this recent D20 review on DPR. It also mentions the one hour underwater limit. There is apparently an optional underwater case that lets you go deeper and I assume longer.

I've also considered the D20 due to it's convenient size, but I do not dive. I just want a waterproof protection for my camera while kayaking. I have used the Canon case with my G9, but it's quite bulky for my tastes, and very difficult to see what is on the LCD in bright sunshine. I prefer to use a ziplock bag more often than the waterproof case, so I might "upgrade" some day to a small waterproof camera, but image quality has not impressed me vs my G9. This is one of the main reasons I have kept my G9; small size and excellent images vs the smaller sensor cameras.

Edit; You might also want to consider the S110 plus an underwater case combo. Much better imaging, for not much more money when you look at adding an underwater housing.
