I am a traveling photographer, and I prefer to travel light.

I do both landscapes and portraits when I am traveling, and since I started doing off camera flash portraits, I have been thinking about using my tripod (Gitzo gt1542t) as a lightstand (when traveling)

Then I can use my tripod for landscapes and lighting, and just leave my real light stand at home.

Is this a good solution? Anyone else doing it? :)

It's common to have at least one of a set of portrait lights supported above the subject's height.

I've never seen a "portable" tripod that could support a light at ten feet from the floor. From the specs that I found, that Gitzo tripod couldn't even support a light at six feet above the floor.

That said, you should be able to fasten most photographic lights to a tripod assuming you can find or make the appropriate adapters.
