My wife and I made a trip this weekend to Joshua Tree National Park and managed to scurry around the park to snap a few pictures of the Milky Way once the Moon began to set. Hope everyone likes them.

Very nice images, Scott. I really like #1 a lot. The only distracting thing about #1 is the portion of the rock you captured in the upper right had part of the image. But otherwise, stellar job!

I like the first one how your composed the curve of the MW arcs with the curve of the rocks.

Thanks everyone. Nburwell, I couldn't get the rock out of the way because there were so many people at this location trying to shoot the Milky Way, so I had to work with what I had. I was only able to capture a handful of pictures at that because people kept getting in the way. There's nothing more frustrating when people walk up to a known shooting location at night with white lights on. lol Settings:14mm for 36" seconds at f/2.8 and ISO 4000.

Great pictures. I live about 40 miles from the Joshua Tree NP. I went there for the meteor shower few years back and some camping, wheeling. I will schedule to go there after the summer.

dumb question but what was that rule of thumb in terms of focal length and recommended/max time for leaving the shutter open?

divide 600 by the focal length = maximum seconds before star trails on a full frame.

Crop body first convert lens to full frame equivent; ex. 14mm lens x 1.6 = 22.4mm

600 / 22.4 = 26 seconds

THat's what it was! Thanks! I will try that.
