The clamps aren't pretty but they work.

Jim, when I asked for photos, you paid it back in spades! Thank you. It's a lot of fun seeing how each individual photographer evolves solutions to address the challenges that he's faced in his particular working environment. :)

I see you were using the A-clamps to attach the battery pack to the light stands. Would a clamp like the one Cheetah is coming out with be less effective? (similar clamps can be found from several others like Photogenic and Quantum, among others)

The Cheetah clamps certainly are more attractive and versatile. The only problem I have with my spring clamps is that they only really work on the thicker part of my light stand. I've also had the rubber "feet" on the clamps come loose which means that the gripping power is diminished a bit.

So would you upgrade your clamps to the Cheetah (or equivalent) at some point in the future?

Perhaps. But what I have works for now.

Excellent work and write up.

I do find the dude on the right a bit creepy though. Something about the expression, looking straight in the camera and grabbing her arm. Sort of like he is saying...'Yeah...you know'.

LOL! It's the nature of the beast. Even when you're a seasoned wedding photojournalist, there's no accounting for all the odd things people do. And honestly, it's little quirky things like this that keep it fun and interesting both for the pro, as well as for the couple.

Thanks for posting, Jim! You have demonstrated your technical skill and ability to adapt to unexpected circumstances while delivering top notch results! Great use of example images with proper explanations!

I am grateful to have had you as my wedding photographer. (Thanks Nicksan!)

It was my esteemed pleasure to photograph your e-session and wedding! You and A remain one of my top 5 favorite couples. Not only were you were willing to adapt to a change in plans when the rain never let up, you did so cheerfully and willingly, trusting in me to create some beautiful images of you two despite the relentless downpour. I just wish all my couples could be as wonderful to work with as you two!

For those of you who are confused by the conversation, Nicksan, who was originally booked for this wedding, reached out to me a couple of weeks or so before the date and asked me if I would consider shooting L and A's wedding as Nick and his wife were expecting their first born child around the time of the wedding. Being the consummate professional, Nick did not want this wonderful couple to not risk not having a photographer for their wedding. I had the date open and L and A agreed to the change in photographers, so I drove to Savannah to meet with this lovely couple for the first time the day before the wedding. L turned out to be an aspiring photographer himself and we immediately hit it off.

The wedding day turned out to be a disaster, weather wise, but we still got some incredible photos! As I said earlier, this couple was an absolute delight to work with....and the best part was that Nick and his wife delivered a beautiful child!

I can't believe I missed this thread.

Jim...wow...you are one of the most generous people I know. Such an inspiration!

I'll always remember L and A's wedding day because it was the same day my daughter was born. I'm glad it all worked out! :)

This is a great lighting set up for receptions. I will have to use your set up.

Thanks Mike! Perhaps you can take a little of what I do and modify it to fit your needs. Every venue is different and requires a customized approach for best results.
