This is high praise indeed! Jesus, you should write up a post which describes your amazing skills with light and processing. I, for one, would love to read how you process your incredible photos.

Jim,
I'll say it again, just so the late arrivers don't miss out. These are great tutorial threads.
Your experience, insights and creative vision are well illustrated. And, as you have pointed out repeatedly, any lighting scheme has to be adapted to a specific venue.

Fortunately, your illustrations and explanations provide significant insight for those willing to study them.

Thanks

Jim

Im doing exactly what your doing. But I have had big issues with it when i have to do it with speedlights. If I have 110V I can use the Pocketwizard Flex and Mini triggers and have zero issues. Plus I can put a speed light in the camera's TT1 and fill from the front for that shadow issue you showed. It works great.

Problem is speedlights. The Pw's dont pay nice with the 580's. As soon as i get 30- 35FT or split the lights to where this distances I shoot at are more than 30-35'...numerous misfires with the outer lights. PW wizard tells me its a 580 issue and to use 430ex11's.

I Have a friend back here in MN that uses the Yongnuo speedlights and triggers in manual mode and we triggered those lights from 50Ft everytime. So Im Thinking of getting a set of these Yongno's for reception lighting because its difficult at times to locate 110V at reception venues, especially on dance floors often stuck corners of a room.

Do you use speed lights for these set ups and If so, what would you suggest ?? I know if i use the Yongnuo's I loose ability to fill from from with the TT1... trade off,, but Its something that I need to fix for 2014

The Yongnuo YN-622 triggers can treat the on-camera flash as group A (E-TTL) while the remotes (groups B and/or C) can be set manually. Is that what you're looking for?

Mike,
As others have posted, there is a problem with pocket wizards and 580's playing nice together. When I use to use speed lights for receptions, I used Sunpack 383's. These are cheap, manual only speed lights. They are no longer being manufactured but you can buy them on ebay for about $60 each. There are other cheap lights out there that work just as well.

So for the price of a cheap transmitter, you can buy some speedlights to add to your collection and continue to use pocket wizards.

The easy solution to the 580EXII problem with flexes is to use Nissin Di866.
They have been tested and certified by PW. They do not have the RFI problem with the flexTT5.

I ended up buying three of them. They worked great. I still have them after selling my ControlTL stuff and getting 600EX-RTs. Available if you want them to test.

save file > open in quicktime player

should not be an issue with any version of mac os x, in fact the videos were produced on a mac.
