Hi Guys,

Here are two images from my latest photoshoot. I used very messy lighting setup and modifiers as we did this in my living room which is quite small.
I deployed 4 Canon flashes, as the weather outside was very grumpy and there wasn't good quality light available through the window I placed one of the flashes outside on the balcony to mimic a sunny day.
Here is a sample of how the ambient light was like in my living room (yes my background consisted of the windows curtain)

Then by using small Canon flashes I managed to achieve something like this:

Thanks.

Very nice! Looking at the catch lights. It looks like you had the speedights in small soft boxes?

Yes, very nice shots. And if you don't mind sharing, I'd also like more info on your setup.

Thanks for the good words guys, I'm really glad that you like the final result.

The setup for the first image was:
One 430EX outside on the balcony gelled with full CTO aimed at the back of my model and going through the curtain. Then my key light was mounted on a large softbox right of the camera and almost at the same level as the camera angle, all because of the hat. Then I had a fill light right under, between my camera and the model, firing through one rounded large/medium reflector holder( I think the name of it was 1 in 8 or 1 in 4 reflector). And the last light here was another flash on the model right and slightly behind her aiming and bouncing light from the wall, I gelled this flash in magenta as I wanted to create more natural ambient look.

For the second image I just replaced the large softbox with medium size beauty dish and also placed 1/2 stop cto gel then I took the light from the balcony and placed on the couch where my model was sitting and I also replaced the CTO with full blue gel. For this flash I used the same large softbox but without the diffusers I just bounced the flash light from the inner material of the softbox which was kind of silver reflective surface. Then I balanced that blue light with this very same magenta flash from the previous setup so this two flashes, the magenta and the blue one where the lights for my environment. I used the same way for my fill light from the first image, here I also need to adjust my shutter speed settings and alter the flashes power output as I was aiming at creating completely different mood and look.

I hope I was helpful with something ;)

Thanks.
Nik.

I didn't even notice it at first, but after reading your description I noticed the magenta cast that it puts on the subjects hat in the first image; it actually looks a bit odd to me as I wouldn't generally expect to see that sort of gradient color shift on the hat. Nonetheless, these were well done!

Good job. Very creative use of your Speedlites. What brand gels/holder did you use?

Great job. Just goes to show what can be done with speed lights and modifiers when you know what your doing.
