So for the past 3 years I've been using Yongnuo 602s and have been fairly happy with them (there has been some misfiring through the pc-port on my 5d, but that could be for a variety of reasons). Lately I've been thinking I need more than just the 3 receivers I currently have and thought it would be a good time to upgrade all of the units.

Is there a particular model of yongnuo product that has been released in the meantime that you would recommend ? I'd be particularly happy if I could ditch the CR2 battery requirements of the transmitter (and even the AAA's in the receiver are slightly annoying); also, the transmitter door has also been a problem at times.

Thanks !

I recently switched from an Einstein/cyber commander setup to a yongnuo 560 with 603 wireless triggers. I'm not positive but I believe the 603 is backwards compatible with the 602 and they use AAA batteries. Also the new yn 560iii has a built in 603 transceiver. But either way, so far I'm very happy with my 603's.

603s are not interoperable with the 602s.

I'd go with the 603s. I have both 602s and 603s and the 602s hardly ever see daylight.

I use regular alky batteries, there have been reports that recyclables drop too low in voltage too quickly.

That was originally told to me by a PW tech support guy regarding their triggers. Then I kept hearing similar from others.

Thanks guys--so that's two votes for 603's thus far.

The one thing that appears to be a deal breaker for me is that the 603 doesn't have a mounting hole on it for putting it on a lightstand. What is the workaround for that ?

Edit: oh yes, cold shoes. I haven't used them in a year and have just been screwing (the receiver) into the lightstand, which seems far more secure.

If you are totally rethinking things, consider the YN622c models. They make ETTL a workable option off camera. If you dont use ETTL, and I often dont, you still have the ability to control the power of the flashes remotely. You can use them to do HSS which is a major plus as well.

^ I almost never use ETTL, but controlling flash power remotely would be unbelievable. Are there any downsides to using them with a 5d (classic) / 30D + 430 ex setup ?

I just bought a pair...the downside is that you cannot manually control EX flashes via camera's menu. EX flashes only operate in Ettl. EX II flashes you have full control, provided the camera has that option which I don't believe the 5D classic and the 30D have....

You can still trigger the ex flashes in manual, but you have to dial in the power at the flash. They are less functional with the older bodies that dont have flash control, but they still do ettl.

If the YN-622Cs interest you, you can read about capability and compatibility here:

thanks for correcting me on that. it's the yn 560iii that works with both 603 and 602. i confused myself.
