Let's say you have a portfolio of 50 strong images - artistic landscapes, wildlife, etc - and you have them up on several POD (print on demand) sites ... how often do you sell the same image (different sizes or medium perhaps)?

I've learned my craft shooting events (bike races, running races, triathlons, etc) but now I am thinking that I have one image, that one person MAYBE interested in. Nobody else will want to buy it. However, if I shift my focus to other subjects (wildlife, landscapes), now I have one image that MORE than one person might be interested in. However, in real life, how often do you get repeat sales? I know it depends on how strong of an image you can create, but I'd like to hear some input. Anyone? :D

My pictures: John Wilke Photography (external link), Flikr (external link) , Facebook (external link), Fine Arts America (external link), Canon 1D MkII N, 1D MkIII, various Canon and Tokina lenses. :D

I am going to start by saying I do not have a site that shows all my images for sale, I have a FB page that I state every now and again that if your interested to contact me. But from my last trip I have sold the same image 3 times already. Plus one for myself :) I had it on my wall and a friend gave me cash on the spot to take it home with him, and two others from people seeing it on FB.

But that is not the norm for me :) Just happened I got an amazing images that people like. But I hope to sell the heck out of it lol.

How often depends on how many folks are moved enough by the image to want to buy it. My best selling image to date has been purchased 74 times so far. I dont yet do limited editions so, the sky is the limit (to a point)..;)

EOS 6d, 7dMKII, Tokina 11-16, Tokina 16-28, Sigma 70-200mm F/2.8, Sigma 17-50 F/2.8, Canon 24-70mm F/2.8L, Canon 70-200 F/2.8L, Mixed Speedlites and other stuff.

When it ceases to be fun, it will be time to walk away

You can sell an image over and over and over again. There is no limit.

One exception is that if you submit it to a commercial client with whom you've signed a "first rights" contract - in that case, you cannot submit an image to them if it has been published already by someone else. But, once they have published it, you can then sell it without limits.

Another exception is that if you sell a usage license with "exclusive rights". If the contract simply states "exclusive rights", then you can never sell it to be published again, unless there are exceptions allowed for in the contract.

But, if you're just selling prints, there is no limit at all.

I have a handful of images that have sold several dozen times (thru microstock agencies). In fact, there's one image I just made available last October, and it has already sold 198 times. Other stock contributors have done much, much better than this, with a single images selling several times a day, every day, for years.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

I have sole various images many times. And some of those sales were with a nice profit because they were things such as 24 x 36 acrylics, metals, canvases, etc.

But one word of advice. You mentioned POD. On almost all POD sites, it's a numbers game. I would recommend you create an online presence with many more than 50 images.

Oh, yes - you HAVE to be able to sell an image many times over; otherwise, one would never be able to make any type of substantial income at this. As Dan said in the above post, it is a numbers game. If you don't have the numbers (sales volume) you need, then you'll be out of business in a heartbeat.

Limited edition prints should have a predetermined print run that must (legally?) be honoured.

EDIT: Just reread and saw the POD info. Disregard above statement. ;)
