Hi fellows,

I updated my Canon 40d from firmware version 1.0.5 to 1.1.1 and my lenses do not even focus anymore, also I can not open the menu or see anything on the big screen but I can change F-ratio thanks to small screen but can not shoot photos in auto-focus mode, when I use P,Tv,Av,M,C3,C2,C1. But if I choose creative zone moods(for example portrai) or A-DEP mode everything functions. When lens is not connected everything functions and it shoots photo without lens in every mood and also big screen functions.

I reseted it to the factory settings and it also did not help. i installed the old versions with .fir but also it did not help. When I connect the lens, the camera turns into a analog camera :/ After connecting, i cannot even see anything on the screen, no live view or any settings. It makes a funny noise when i change the F - ratio and it changes 1 second delayed which was not like that before the problems started. It does not work anymore with lenses(neither Canon nor Tamron):/ i also tried version 1.0.8 and 1.0.5 but no help. I do not know what to do and do not have any guarantee as i bought it second hand... So i do not know what else to try.

Do you have any advices?

Sincerely
Adam

Most likely the firmware has nothing to do with your issues. The 40D latest firmware has no reported issues that I remember. Most likely the camera coincidentally flaked out during the update period.

Pull both batteries and let the camera set overnight perhaps?

This ...

Pull both batteries and let the camera set overnight perhaps.

but I would add that after batteries are removed, put the power switch to ON, the hold the shutter button down for 30 seconds. Then put the switch to OFF, wait over night just to be sure, reinstall batteries and retest. While waiting for the overnight period fully charge the main battery. You might consider replacing the date/time battery as well. Probably about $5.

Hi thank you all for the advices, I am 90 % sure now, that the problem is caused by depth-of-field-preview-button. The camera behaves like, as if this button would be continuiosly pushed, altough it is not. I realised that funny noise commes because when I change F-parameter it automaticly narrows the blende. Normally it should just happen during photo-taking and not all the time.

Any further advices? can i demontage the camera and repair itself?

Do not start to disassemble the camera and try to repair it yourself. That usually just ends up with an unrepairable camera.

Reinstall the newest firmware.

Did the problem only start after installing the new firmware?

Does it do the same thing with different lenses, or only with one particular lens? If it only happens with one lens, I'd suspect the lens is at fault, not the camera.

"Reboot" the camera, as described above or here. This is to clear any incorrect instructions that might be "stuck" in the memory.

Try cleaning the lens-to-camera contacts. Use a clean rag lightly moistened with a few drops of isopropyl alcohol (also called "rubbing" alcohol or isopropynol). This is to remove oils or other contaminants from the contacts, that might be interrupting the signals from camera to lens. Be careful when cleaning the lens to keep off the optics.

Also check the corresponding contacts just inside the front of the camera. These are spring-loaded and you might gently press each one to make sure they aren't sticking.

The contacts on both camera and lens are gold-plated to prevent any sort of oxidization, just be careful not to damage the gold plating.

It is possible it's something else such as the DOF preview button is sticking or has failed in the "on" position. That would be a pretty unusual problem. I would not try to fix that myself. Aside from cleaning the contacts, replacing batteries and doing the "reboot", the safest and best course of action would be to get a repair shop to look at the camera and lens, to see if they can repair it affordably. If you don't have a local shop, send it to Canon Service Dept. (Look on the Canon website for the closest service dept.)

Thank you amfoto1,

I tried it but still no use. I consider now if I should buy another scond hand 40d cause it costs max 250Euro and if I send it to any service it could cost also so much :/

I don't know. It's just funny. I bought it in September,2012 and had just 3800 shutter-count. Now it has 28800 shutter-count. I expected a couple of more years with it :/
