Looking at my 200L (2.0) through the back element, I can see big 3 japanese letters on the side of one of the back barrels written by a marker (or something similar). My friend's 200L has the same thing with different letters. So strange! Is it like the person who put the lens together signs the lens?:D

It says "Quit wasting your time looking in here and go take pictures", but in Japanese haiku form.

but seriously, interesting find. My guess is that parts get marked for various reasons during assembly. Maybe try and get a pic, im sure someone here reads Japanese.
(sorry, meant to edit my first post, but failed somehow..)

And if it was a 3rd party lens he'd be complaining and sending it back ;)

Reparing older lenses I sometimes notice numbers on lens sub assembly barrels. As far as I understand those where used to mark the exact focal length or thickness from a sub assembly to be paired with a matching other sub assembly - for example front cell and back cell of a complete lens. Or to use the correct spacer during assembly.
At least in modern mass production this is no longer needed, cause CNC lens ginding/polishing machines tolerances from lens to lens are small enough, so no need for matching lens groups together.
But I could imaging that highest quality lens production still uses this system to get the best out of the produced parts.
