Thinking of picking up a vintage lens with a non-chipped adapter.

Just wondering if I will be able to use flashes in TTL mode with no data coming from the lens.

I don't use TTL at all really(prefer manual), but I did try it once and it worked just fine. It was with a Sears 135mm 2.8 stopped down to F4.

Aperture priority works flawlessly as well. Even with a chipped adapter, I've tried it with both types.

I strongly advise that readers of this thread always TEST THEIR OWN setup before deciding whether or not the above statement is valid for them!

I have done considerable testing, with two models of cameras and chipped and unchipped adapters, and find that when using stopped down ambient light metering, Av mode is NOT necessarily accurate!

All of these Av mode shots should be of identical density, not changing as the aperture changes...

I have found that different lenses result in different meter behavior, and different models of Canon can also result in different meter behavior. There is no consistency that would allow one to use some simple compensation mentally to overcome the meter error. This old post demonstrates the variability of behavior...

My own methodology is simply to meter with a handheld incident meter, and the exposure set on the camera manually.

10D works great in AV with chipped adapters from Big IS and one from neewer(M42 and Pentax),
I'll make you a video if you don't believe me...

You can simply shoot a series of exposures, and use identical post processing values to process the resulting RAW shots and post the results on POTN, I don't need a video to show what your camera does.

And if your results with 10D look good, it simply then proves my statement that results can vary with camera model! :D

This old thread provides evidence from a number of other photographers, about the 'your mileage will vary'. Starting about Post 19 in the thread, which is about using different focusing screens, and other photographers join in with similar tests and resulting observations https://photography-on-the.net …p?p=10022399&postcount=31
