Everytime I press the shutter button halfway the triggers flash (the channel, group light both flash while the ready light turns green). Is this normal?

Also how do I get my Canon 50D to default to automatic zoom instead of 24mm/manual?

It is normal - see TOYUG, esp. page 18 - link in my signature.

In the flash control menus, set Zoom back a step from 24mm - p. 11. Except - Canon rules - p.17 in TOYUG.
