I may have a chance to pick up a used " like new" Sigma 70 mm 2.8 macro for under $200.
I have a T4i with the 18-135 STM lens. Would this be a good first macro lens?

Thanks for any and all replies.
Lenny

Bugs and insects, pens that I make, flowers ... the usual stuff.

My concern about this lens is the ad doesn't list the full description. I'm not sure if it's an older lens for film camera or earlier digitals. It's a local (in state) sell it/swap it ad. I have emailed the seller but have yet to hear back. So many ads I see, not here but on fleabay etc., list lenses as "macro" when really they aren't. Heck, even my Canon 18-135 STM says it's a macro. ???
If it's the Sigma 70mm 2.8 EX DG macro, then I think it's a good buy. But I'm asking the experts because I'm pretty new to this! =0)

for bugs 70mm might give you a reduced working distance, but for the other things is a good lens.

Ideally, and this may be just what I do, I would wait and save up for the Canon 100mm macro. Everyone here seems to like it quite a bit. I just thought this Sigma might be a way to get started for a little le$$!

I haven't yet heard on any macro lens that isn't good. but there are some lens that are better (for a particular job) then others. for insects 100mm is better then 70mm.

As far as I know Sigma didn't make any earlier versions of their current 70mm macro so it should be fine. Subject to the usual quibbles about legality and undeclared damage, of course.

Thanks for the responses.
I have emailed the seller twice with no response so either he has already sold it or has changed his mind.
Do to the popularity of the Canon 100 mm macro among the members here, I will probably save up and try to pick up one of those eventually.

I have the 100mm macro and think it an awesome lens. Its uber sharp and would be perfect for what you are wanting to do. I would encourage you to save up and get the best tool for the job.
