Are there any equivalent, or pretty close, yongnuo models that can match up to either Canon flash?

Yes the YN-500EX is quite close to the 430EX II (though a few tenths of a stop below in power) -

And the YN-568EX and YN-568EX II is similar to the 580EX, but it doesn't have an external battery port (again a few tenths of a stop behind in power) -

The Phottix Mitros at $299 is right up there with the 580EX II otherwise -

Even down to $289 on Amazon (external link) with free shipping, its really hard to beat at that price.

Honestly the 430EX II is an awesome flash. I happened to run into Best Buy and find one that was returned with no damage or anything for USD $208 (originally $299).

Yeah, I have to agree. I had one 430EXII and recently bought a YN 568EX thinking it would be a step up. It wasn't: recycle times slower than 430EXII; only about 1/5th as many consecutive flashes for action photography; narrower/more defined beam; blueish color compared to Canon; bigger/bulkier; most importantly, no more powerful than the 430EXII.

So... I found a genuine Canon refurb for $205 a couple of weeks ago at the Canon refurb store. Like most Canon refurbs, it is like new. I am going to keep the YN but doubt I'll buy another (I also have a YN 460EXII from a couple of years ago - nice little flash but not very powerful.)

My suggestion: get a 430EXII refurb and skip the YN
