I like the simplicity of this shot and the great colours. I would think that the shot would look great either way with or without the star trails.

I like the colours and its powerful - But I think its all a bit too "central" for me I would have liked to see what it would be like using the 3rds rule. I also wondered if placing the camera a little lower and having the rocks break the horizon would give the shot even more power - That said its still a good picture

Thanks for the comments guys. I'm assuming the trails are from stars..

nmac, and anyone else wondering technical details..the exposure was 8min @ f/8. saturation turned up within RSE, noise was removed with neat image and the curves were played with a bit. W/B was also changed because there was alot of spill from the surrounding area. this was also shot a little after sunset when the sky still had color to it.

Excellent shot! But how did you get a 8min exposure?

Tripod and the outrageously priced canon timer. To get the exposure, walking into a scene I pretty much know what it's going to be at. That stuff is ingrained into my head. Another way to do night stuff (one of the perks of having a digital camera, and I have done this a few times) and get a pretty close reading is bump up the ISO all the way to 3200 open up the lens all the way and start with a simple short shutter, usually the camera will give a pretty decent reading. It could be telling you 2" @ f/4 ISO 3200. So if you wanna shoot ISO 100 F/8, that’s a 7 stop difference. So just work that into your shutter speed so the same exposure would around 256" or about 4-5 minutes. So then shoot it 4-5 minutes and bracket if you aren't seeing what you like.

I think I’m answering your question...Either way it's good to know your exposures for different scenes in your head because you don't have the luxury and changing ISO and chimping on the scene with film.

Lovely shot, indeed! I cropped a little off the top and I think it made for a stronger composition ...
