I have a 600D/T3i and I'm looking for a cheap flashgun. Yongnuo get mentioned a lot and there's a YN-460 on amazon for £30. I know it's not TTL, but has good reviews and can be triggered wirelessly by the onboard flash according to reviewers. The alternative is a Godox (AKA Neewer) TT250 for a similar price. Apparantly the YN flash has only one contact. Will this be a problem. I intend to use it on cam to gain experience.
Regards,
Col.

I would pass on that particular flash. If you are looking for a cheap YN flash, see if you can find a reasonably priced YN460-II.

Edited to correct model numbers:

I actually picked the 560 over the 560-II because it does not have the LCD menu to over complicate things. There are pretty much just 2 options: power and zoom, all I wanted. I have 3: they are simple, reliable, cheap flashes and in my experience pretty much perfect for learning with.

I did start learning flash with a Canon 430EX but spent most of my time with my head in the manual trying to work out what was going on, the simplicity of the 560s can't be beat IMO!

Why would you get the 460 when the 560 II is so cheap? Like 15 USD bucks more than the 460 yet looks a billion times better along with better build quality.

If you don't need TTL for under $100 USD the YN 560 II is the clear winner(I love mine)

If you can swing $200 USD the Luma pro 180 is twice as good, getting a pair of them soon!

Oops, I've just had a look and I have 560s not 460s! (my logic about simple, reliable and cheap still stands though)

Saw this link http://www.amazon.co.uk …=1&qid=1374603599&sr=8-16 (external link) for the 560 and my reservation is that according to one review, the camera doesn't detect the flash. I have an old luxon flash that gives me a 'no compatible flash' error. I'd like to get it to work as well. Any Ideas how to do this? Also the 560 II is only £3-£5 more. Is it a better bet?

I have the 460ii I got off eBay cheap and I use it all the time on off camera stuff. I wanted something cheap and simple button wise, it fits the bill nicely. If the 560 is slightly more the extra power might be nice, but I don't see the build of any of them being that much of an issue at that price range.

Biggest reason to avoid the YN460 is that it has a plastic foot. The 460ii has a metal foot, get it instead.

YN quietly did an update on the battery doors of the YN460ii, the worst part of the flash. If you get one with the new door, you will have a very handy, more than decent all manual flash.

The 560 line is bigger and more powerful with extras built in.

I've been using two of the original YN 460 flashes for four years and they are still going strong but if this is your only flash get one with ETTL like the 467, 468, 565ex, etc.

Your input is much appreciated. I take it ETTL takesthe guesswork out of everything?

To a point. You put your faith in Canon's computing of exposure, but you can dial in +/- flash compensation if you don't like what it's giving you. You can always flip back over to manual if you want full control and consistency.

What he said.

Also it is supper handy for run/gun situations as the lighting changes and you don't have time to mess with settings. Kids birthday or something like that. That is why I also got a 430exii.
