Lots of Osprey over Mare Island California

Osprey Everywhere!

Mare Island in Vallejo California has seen an increasing Osprey population year after year. They counted 45 chicks hatched this year up from 17 in 2012. I took a couple of days this weekend and checked out the action. These were all taken from the Vista Point next to the eastern approach to the Carquinez Bridges on I-80.

You can see this next right from the freeway. It's on top of the light post at the California Maritime Academy pier. I counted two adults and two juveniles. The adults were constantly flying out to fish and coming back with the goods.

Great shots. Looks like they got some tasty stripped bass.

Great set lennycarl, lol, the flight shots especially. I guess Mom and Dad will be glad when they finally fly, they look pretty busy. Great set, number four is an unusual one, most of the time they will line their lunch up parallel for better flight, this Striper is sideways, coming in for a landing maybe? Love the last one too, great eyes!

Thanks guys! Yeah the striper was sideways and he really wasn't that close to the nest, so I don't know what was up with that. He came at me right over the bridge like that, and the nest was still behind me. I saw one previous day with a HUGE fish, but I had just arrived and couldn't get set for the shot in enough time from head on so I had to settle for this "butt shot"
