I've done a quick search for RAW File Size difference but come up with nothing so forgive me if this has been covered before. Actually it's not really the file size I'm querying but the reported pixel size. Unfortunately my 1dmkIIn's shutter went poof the other day after only 58k clicks so I've had to start using my 5d more than I used to. I'm running Windows 8 and noticed when I selected a 5d jpg file windows reports a picture size of 4368x2912 pixels but when I select the RAW version of the same file it says its only 2496x1664 pixels? I thought this a little strange so I checked some of my shots taken on the 1dmkIIn, it was the same. The jpg size was 3504x2336 pixels whereas the RAW version was reported as being only 1728x1152 pixels? I checked the pixel size of files on my 550d and my 650d and the RAW shots are reported as being the same pixel size as the jpg files. At this stage I thought the older cameras perhaps had inferior firmware although all updates have been done, I dug out my old 350d and loosed off a shot with that. When I put the shot in to Windows both the RAW file and the jpg file were reported as being the same size 3456x2304 pixels each one. I also checked the same files in Fast Picture Viewer Pro and it also reports the same pixel size differential between the RAW and jpg files on the 5d and the 1dmkIIn. If I open a 1dmkIIn or 5d Raw file in Adobe Camera Raw it reports the RAW file is the same pixel size as the jpg ? All the cameras are set to shoot RAW and Large jpg. Sorry for being so long winded, anyone got any ideas as to why there is this anomaly? Surely all the cameras should report the same info shouldn't they?

Curious, but I wouldn't put much stock in how the OS is reporting image size where raw files are concerned.

Can't speak for the photo viewer software though.

I use faststone image viewer for basic viewing, and it gives me weird sizes for RAW files as well. When I check the file properties though, it is correct.

RAW files have JPEG images embedded within them. (You see these JPEG images displayed on your LCD screen when you review your images). I'm guessing the size of the embedded JPEG is 1728x1152 pixels and that's what your image viewing software is showing....

I think you win the prize sir! The newer cameras indeed have full-size JPEG previews embedded in raw. OP's experience can be easily verified with this tool:

Yes, Windows just tells the number of pixels in the "thumbnail" embedded with the raw file.

Yes, Canon probably have a deal with the memory card makers - wants us to buy larger memory cards by making our raw files extra large :p

The extra resolution helps a lot when you zoom in to check focus on the camera's LCD.

I actually think the 5D3 have full-res jpeg in the raw file, so your Windows 8 is probably still not reporting the size of the raw file but the jpeg "thumbnail" inside.

My 20D, 50D and 7D raw files also report the correct size.

All the xxxD cameras from the 300D on use full size previews (not really thumbnails). As far as I am aware all the xxD models also have full size previews. I beleive it was only the 1 series cameras, along with the original 5D that used the smaller preview, as they were very high pixel count cameras for their day, and card sizes were quite limited then, compared with today. A 12Mpix camera in the days when a 1gig card were huge needed all the help it could get.
